    摘要: A semifinished leather product is produced from an animal hide by pretanning with the use of a chromium-free tanning agent and of a clay mineral which, after stirring for 30 minutes in water at 50° C. at a circumferential rotor speed of from 5 to 25 m/s, has a number average particle diameter of less than 2 μm or a bimodal particle size distribution with a first, finely divided fraction whose number average particle diameter is less than 0.5 μm and a second, coarser fraction whose number average particle diameter is less than 5 μm, determined in each case by the method according to ISO 13320-1, by combined laser light diffraction and light scattering, a proportion of the first, finely divided fraction being from 10 to 90% by weight, and drying of the pretanned animal hide to a water content of from 5 to 45%, based on the total weight of the semifinished leather product.

After retannage with vegetable tannins, it is possible to obtain both a mineral-free and aldehyde-free white leather having Ts >85° C. and suitable for automotive internal trim and a mineral-free and aldehyde-free high thermal stable organic leather having Ts >100° C. and suitable for shoe production.

    摘要: A method of treating aldehyde-tanned biological tissue minimizes in vivo calcification and reduces cytotoxicity without impairing the mechanical strength of the tanned tissue. The method includes the step of treating the aldehyde-tanned biological tissue with at least one liquid polyol having the formula: ##STR1## where R is CH.sub.2 OH or an alkyl group, and R' is H, an alkyl group or an O-acyl where the acyl is C.sub.2 -C.sub.9 or a carboxyalkyl; or ##STR2## where R is H or an alkyl group, and R' is H, an alkyl group, O-alkyl or O-carboxyalkyl. Preferred polyols are propylene glycol, 1,3-propanediol, 2,3-butylene glycol and glycerol, and the polyol is preferably a diol.

The process includes physiochemical operations, such as tanning, retanning, and finishing, to provide an aniline, semi-aniline, or pigmented hair-side appearance on the flesh side of the skin. By providing reversible skins in accordance with the process, finished leather articles can be manufactured without the necessity of providing linings.
