The drive assemblies (31) are powered from the hydraulic system of the parent machine, such as a combine, tractor, or mower/conditioner. This unit, while being designed to retrofit existing cutting machines, can also be used for new production models.

A pair of endless chains are mounted on sprockets in a cutting unit supported by a mobile unit, the chains having plates with angular notches on their inner, meeting course. Each pair of opposed plates close upon the stalk forming a ring around the same and the plates move upwardly on the stalk, and rearwardly, as the mobile unit moves forwardly thus removing the pods from the stalks.
