An ignition device 11 for a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine is to be designed so that it operates reliably even under conditions of vibration acceleration of the internal combustion engine. Ignition device 11 has, depending on the number of cylinders of the internal combustion engine, rod-shaped ignition coils 12. An end section 22 of each ignition coil 12 is formed by a part of a core 23 of ignition coil 12 that protrudes from a housing 20 of ignition coil 12. A damper 29 is mounted on the part of core 23. The other end section 21 of ignition coil 12 is formed by a high-voltage dome 27, which is mounted in a socket 39 made of elastic material and placed in a spark plug pit 15 of a cylinder head 13 of the internal combustion engine. Ignition device 11 is elastically held by fastening element 33 and secured at both end sections 21, 22 on cylinder head 13 of the internal combustion engine. The high voltage is transferred in an elastic manner to a corresponding spark plug 16 via a high-voltage contact element 48, designed as a spring.

The invention is to a system in which a high voltage source is connected to and continuously supplies a RF voltage to each spark plug wire in an automotive ignition. The high voltage is capacitively connected by placing a metal clip on each spark plug wire and connecting the high voltage source to the metal clips. The metal clip and conductor in the spark plug wire forms the two plates for the capacitor and the insulating material on the spark plug wire is the dielectric of the capacitor. The application of the high voltage to the spark plug wire produces a continuous corona discharge at the tip of the spark plug internal to the engine. A corona discharge surface may also be on one surface of the engine head in the combustion chamber.

An ignition coil is disclosed that includes a primary coil, a secondary coil and a core about which the primary and secondary coil are disposed. The secondary coil has in inner diameter greater than the diameter of the primary coil. The primary coil is disposed on the core and the secondary coil is disposed about the primary coil. The secondary coil includes a spiral-back pyramid winding configuration which results in a desired distributed capacitance for the secondary windings thereby providing desired electrical characteristics for a resonant circuit. The winding layers of the secondary coil decrease in the number of turns as the coil is wound to achieve a desired distributed capacitance of the coil. A spiral-back winding technique decreases adjacent winding layer voltages so that the inter-layer insulation requirements are reduced to a lower value thereby decreasing the insulation thickness of the secondary coil.
