    摘要: Batteries based on lead chemistry, e.g., lead-acid batteries, are substantially improved through the use of a particular positive material. This material is formed by the electrochemical conversion of tetrabasic lead sulfate (TTB) where this TTB is synthesized at a pH in the range 9.3 to 12 and under reaction conditions that provide a substantial excess of sulfate to the reactive lead. The resulting materials provide needle-like structures with a width generally in the range 3 to 1 .mu.m. The relative narrow needles, when employed on the positive electrode of a lead acid battery, improve the efficiency of formation, provide good adhesive to the positive plate, extend battery life, as well as, yield excellent capacity per gram of active material.

    摘要: Methods for fabricating cored structures are provided. The cored structures may particularly find usefulness as cored battery plates for use in lead/acid batteries. A pre-formed core element is provided, and on its surfaces there is placed a thin layer of an active surface material. That active surface material is one which may enter into a chemical or electrochemical process when in use and in the presence of an electrolyte or other agent which will promote such chemical or electrochemical process. In the case of lead/acid batteries, the active surface is lead or lead oxide. The core element is generally one which does not bond with the active surface material, but will if the active surface material is ion bombarded or neutral atom embedded into the surface of the core, and where the amount of bombardment or embedment is determined by controlling the accelerator voltage. A typical cored battery plate for lead/acid batteries will have titanium or other low resistivity metal, with titanium at its outer surface in any event, and with lead having been ion implanted onto the surface of the titanium until such time as an essentially pure lead surface is attained. Further lead may be placed using other methods until sufficient lead is present as to form the active lead surface. The lead may be subsequently oxidized.

    摘要: A process and apparatus is provided for filling tubular plate positive electrodes for use in lead-acid secondary cells with lead oxide particulate material in a highly fluid slurry form wherein tubular plate positive electrode assemblies comprising a plurality of substantially lead spines aligned on a conductive bar, each spine enveloped by a porous tubular sheath, are footed prior to being filled with lead oxide particulate material in a highly fluid slurry form. The foot according to the present invention comprises a plurality of aligned projections extending from a base portion and slurry access ports penetrating the foot. Each projection engages a spine within its spine recess and is itself engaged within a tubular sheath, and each projection is provided with at least one slurry access port. Lead oxide particulate material in a highly fluid slurry form is introduced into the annular space between each spine and its corresponding tubular sheath through the slurry access ports penetrating the foot.

    摘要: In making a lead electrode for a lead-acid accumulator or the like, a supporting body of titanium is pickled in a boiling solution of oxalic acid and then adsorptively coated with a titanium (IV) layer in a treatment bath. This treatment is followed by the anodic coating of the titanium body with PbO.sub.2 in an electrolyte containing the ions of lead (II), in the presence of a lead (II) nitrate or a lead (II) salt of an amido, imido, nitrido or fluoro sulfate or phosphate. The treatment bath may be an aqueous solution of an organic titanium salt, the pickling solution, or the electrolyte. If the pickling solution is used for this purpose, the titanium body is anodically connected or the solution is oxygenated. If the electrolyte is utilized, Ti(IV) ions are introduced into that liquid in which the titanium body is immersed for an extended period before closure of the anodizing circuit.

    摘要: A tube plate for a storage battery is formed from a grid of conductive rods that are surrounded by active material held in place by a sheath of insulating material. The conductive rods are centered in their respective sheaths by centering fins solely lying in the plane of the electrode. The conductive rods are centered in the perpendicular direction by placing the electrode in a jig which has cylindrical channels for receiving the sheaths. In each channel, two rows of needle-like elements are provided which penetrate the sheath and engage the rod surface during the period when the active material in powder form is loaded into the electrode.
