Polymeric flame retardants comprise halogenated aromatic compounds having acylamino functional groups which are chemically bonded to cyclic imide-containing or imide-forming polymers or copolymers. The polymeric flame retardants are prepared by the reaction of halogenated aromatics containing a reactive hydrazido group with some or all of the anhydride groups of an cyclic alpha, beta-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydride polymer or copolymer to form pendant halogenated-aromatic-substituted imide or amic acid groups. In addition, polymeric film retardants are used to render thermoplastic resins less flammable under conditions which promote combustion. Novel flame retardant hydrazides are disclosed.

A lithographic printing ink contains an ester-modified carboxyl-containing copolymer as a pigment dispersant. The ester-modified carboxyl-containing copolymer is the reaction product of a long chain alcohol and a styrene maleic anhydride copolymer, wherein at least 35% of the carboxyl groups of the styrene maleic anhydride copolymer are esterified. The ink further includes a liquid carrier resin; a pigment; and a solvent selected from the group consisting of aliphatic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, and mixtures thereof and/or a modifying oil. The pigment dispersants improve color development when incorporated into the ink during the grinding stage.

The invention comprises a curable composition comprising: (i) a blocked reactive component wherein the blocked reactive component is a blocked isocyanate or a blocked isothiocyanate; (ii) a functional compound reactive with the blocked reactive component, the functional compound containing reactive hydrogen.; (iii) a catalyst for promoting the reaction of the reactive component with the blocked functional compound, wherein said catalyst is based on the reaction product of manganese, cobalt., nickel, copper, zinc, germanium, antimony, or bismuth, or the oxides thereof with a mercaptan, or an organic acid, wherein said organic acid is hexanoic, oxalic, adipic, lactic, tartaric, salicylic, thioglycolic, succinic, or mercapto succinic acid, or the reaction product of copper or germanium, or the oxides thereof with a lower aliphatic acid. The manganese, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc, germanium, antimony, or bismuth catalysts can be used in conjunction with other compounds to promote the reaction, especially compounds based on tin, preferably organotin compounds. Water soluble catalysts are preferred. The coating compositior can be electrocoated on a conductive substrate and cured.
