Abstract:
A scanning system enables efficient and selective downloading of files. A scanning mechanism associated with the scanning system captures images of documents. Then, a translator analyzes the captured images to produce data files. When desired, a system controller of the scanning system transmits sufficient data from the data files such that thumbnail images of the data files can be produced. After viewing the thumbnail images, a user selects one of the data files, and the system controller transmits or downloads the selected data file in response. The selected data file can be transmitted to a computer system, which renders the selected data file to a user, or the selected data file can be transmitted directly to a printer, which prints an image of the selected data file.
Abstract:
Method and apparatus for representing capacities and demands in a layered computing environment using normalized values for identifying optimal allocations of computing resources. A plurality of server models are established, with each server model including one or more server nodes and each server node having an associated set of capacity attributes. Similarly, a plurality of service models are established, each service model including one or more service nodes and each service node having an associated set of demand attributes. The server models are defined with a layered relationship as are the service models. A node that is part of a model in one layer corresponds to a model in the next-lower layer. The invention normalizes the demand and capacity attributes of the server nodes and service nodes in the different model layer in order to generate optimized mappings of service nodes to server nodes.
Abstract:
In one embodiment, selecting a pixel in a screen region on a screen of a monitor of a computer graphics display system to activate in rendering a straight line segment by a rasterizer assigned to the screen region. Steps of aligning a rectangular grid to pixel boundaries, wherein the screen comprises a screen space divided into at least one screen region, wherein the screen region comprises multiple pixels, identifying each pixel in the screen region through which the straight line segment passes, and selecting each identified pixel to activate for rendering the straight line segment on the screen when the straight line segment passes through a diamond shaped area of the pixel whose boundary is defined by the lower, upper, left, and right pixel grid mid-points are disclosed.
Abstract:
This invention relates to the reconstruction of a full color image (20) from an image mosaic (13,14,15) composed of a plurality of image pixels 23,24,25) that have one of at least three color values (16,17,18). The pixels are interleaved in rows and columns across the mosaic with pixels of different color values to form the mosaic in such a way that each row and column contains pixels of at least two colors. A high spatial frequency luminance image (30) is generated from the mosaic that extends across all pixel locations of the image mosaic. The luminance values of pixels (43,44,45) in the high frequency image (30) are adjusted (53,54,55) to reduce zippering effects. The adjustment is performed on pixels generated from a particular color value (16,17,18) at least in a first row and/or a first column of the high frequency luminance image (30) according to the luminance values for said pixels and the luminance values of pixels generated from another color value. A low spatial frequency luminance image (33,34,35) is generated from the mosaic for each color value. After the luminance adjustment the high frequency luminance pixels are combined with each of the low frequency luminance images in order to generate a de-mosaiced image for each of the color values corresponding to said low frequency luminance images.
Abstract:
A management data distribution apparatus has, a control unit, a buffer memory element, at least one input port, and a telecommunications output. The at least one input port is arranged to receive management data from devices located within a network and to pass the management data to the control unit. The control unit is arranged to control output of the management data via the telecommunications output to a remote monitoring site over a telecommunications network. The control unit is also arranged to store management data arriving at the at least one input port when the said telecommunications output is in use in the buffer memory element, temporarily.
Abstract:
The invention concerns the provision of a peer-to-peer content popularity service and particularly to a server, methods and computer program products for providing such a service. A server 30 is provided on a peer-to-peer network. The server 30 is arranged to receive data from supplying client nodes 10,20 concerning search requests received at the supplying client nodes 10, 20 and to aggregate material from the received data to obtain popularity information and to offer popularity information regarding such popular search requests to requesting clients 10,20.
Abstract:
A method is provided of allocating reward in a system that provides user access to multiple information resources including reward-associated information resources such as advertiser websites accessed through banner ads on a website controlled by the system operator. The method involves detecting user access to any of the reward-associated information resources, and thereupon making a random determination of the period of time a user must use the accessed resource before being entitled to a reward. The reward can, for example, be credit against further use of the system.
Abstract:
A computing platform rents a computing environment to execute a process supplied from a user device. Integrity of the computing platform is verified using a trusted device which obtains an integrity metric particularly of the host operating system during start up. The computing environment is confirmed as being suitable for the requirements of the process, and then verified ideally again using an integrity metric of the computing environment produced by the trusted device. The user process is then supplied from the user device to the computing environment.
Abstract:
A location determination method uses location data items that originate at known locations and are passed to, and diffused between, entities by short-range communication. Each location data item received by an entity specifies its originating location and a time value dependent on when it originated from that location. An entity derives its location from received location data items by effecting a weighted combination of the known locations specified in the received location data items, the weighting of the known location specified in each received location data item being dependent on the associated time value.
Abstract:
A computer network comprises first, second, and third computer systems connected to first, second, third and fourth print devices by means of a network connection. Each computer system comprises at least one application program capable of generating print data for output to one or more of the print devices. A server is also connected to the network connection, the server comprising a workflow management program which monitors and controls the flow of print jobs which are sent by the first, second, third and computer systems. The workflow management program maintains a computer model representing the up-to-date state of the system. In response to a new event occurring in the system, such as a hardware failure or a new print job, the program makes a plurality of copies of the computer model and assigns to each copy an alternative event management operation. The program generates a set of prediction data from each copy of the computer model, each set of prediction data representing the predicted future state of the system resulting from applying each respective event management operation. Next, a preferred event management operation is selected based on comparing each set of prediction data with a reference set of prediction data.
