Abstract: Disclosed is a method of generating atomic spin orientation in an atomic ensemble. The method includes providing a steady magnetic field (5) to the atomic ensemble to cause a Zeeman splitting within first and second manifolds of the ground state of the atomic energy levels of the atomic ensemble. The method includes pumping the atomic ensemble with an electromagnetic optical radiation beam, the beam being detuned from a transition involving the first manifold such that a majority of the atomic population of the first manifold in the atomic ensemble is transferred from the first manifold into a magnetic Zeeman sublevel of the second manifold. A system for generating an atomic spin orientation in a 15 atomic ensemble is also disclosed.

Abstract: The invention enables an optical voltage sensor, comprising a piezoelectric actuator mechanically coupled to an optical strain sensor (such as a fibre Bragg grating), to withstand lightning impulses, the effects of which would otherwise be harmful or destructive to the piezoelectric actuator and/or other sensitive components. As such, the optical voltage sensor, comprised within a photonic voltage transducer which also comprises a lightning impulse attenuator, is able to comply with relevant standards and be used for applications in power networks and exposed to the highest voltages for equipment.

Abstract: A medical system for providing radiotherapy is disclosed. The system comprises a particle accelerator configured to produce a radiation beam and irradiate at least a part of a subject with the radiation beam. The particle accelerator comprises a plasma zone comprising or configured to receive a plasma, and at least one beam source configured to provide an excitation beam along an axis through the plasma zone. The medical system is configured to provide a plurality of charged particles in the plasma in a region that propagates through the plasma zone behind the excitation beam such that the plurality of charged particles are accelerated to produce a radiation beam comprising the plurality of charged particles with a broadband energy distribution, wherein: at least part or all of the energy distribution of the radiation beam is substantially exponential or power-law; the radiation beam delivers 75% or more of a dose of the charged particles at and below 2 g/cm2; and/or the energy beam has an energy or energy distribution in the range from 10 eV to 10 MeV.

Abstract: An atomic magnetometer system is disclosed that includes a variable magnetic field source (14) configured to provide an oscillating primary magnetic field to cause a sample (16) to produce a secondary magnetic field. The atomic magnetometer system also includes an atomic magnetometer for detecting the secondary magnetic field. The atomic magnetometer includes an atomic specimen, a pump and probe subsystem configured to pump the atomic specimen to create a polarisation and to probe atomic coherence precession within the atomic specimen with a probe beam, a detector configured to detect the probe beam to produce a detection signal. The system is configured to drive the variable magnetic field source (14) in dependence on the detection signal with a frequency tuned to rf resonance. A method of operating an atomic magnetometer is also disclosed.
