Abstract:
An applet requiring a virtual machine is downloaded to a wireless device. A software platform on the device determines that a virtual machine is used by the applet during execution. Without additional user interaction, the virtual machine is downloaded to the wireless device. This allows those applets requiring a virtual machine to be used with devices that don't have the virtual machine already installed. Further embodiments include the dynamic loading of a system service when an application is being loaded that uses the system service. A unique identifier associated with the system service may be used to determine if determine if the system service is loaded.
Abstract:
A system and method for automatically detecting a peripheral device in communication with a wireless device, such as a wireless telephone, and requesting a driver for the peripheral from a remote server via a wireless communications network. After the driver is received and installed, the wireless device checks automatically for availability of a new version of the driver from the remote server. If there is a new version, the new driver will be downloaded to the wireless handheld device.
Abstract:
A system, method, and program for transmitting data across an idle open communication channel from a wireless device. The wireless device includes a computer platform and a plurality of device resources that selectively utilize a open communication channel to communicate with other devices across the network, and each device resource selectively requests notification of an idle open communication channel, and all device resources that have requested such notification are notified upon an idle open communication channel occurring, and each notified device resource can selectively transmit data across the open communication channel prior to closure thereof.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for billing for the usage of direct group communication services, such as push-to-talk services. A direct group communication service provider sets up an account for each direct communication service user whereby the user can establish a target group of wireless devices associated with his account. A billing server monitors the direct communication attempts of the wireless device of the user with the target group and bills the user based upon a predetermined criteria, such as number of wireless devices in the target group communicated with, use of a direct communication service, or duration of talk time.
Abstract:
The present invention encompasses a mobile station comprising a transmitter for transmitting outgoing signals from the mobile station and a receiver for receiving incoming signals, the receiver coupled to the transmitter and having N sub receivers, where N is an integer greater than one and each of the N sub receivers may independently be tuned to a desired frequency. The present invention also encompasses a wireless communication system comprising a plurality of base stations, where each of the base stations transmits signals on at least one of a plurality of frequencies and a plurality of mobile stations, at least one of the plurality of mobile stations comprises a transmitter for transmitting signals to at least one of the plurality of base stations and a receiver coupled to the transmitter for receiving signals from at least one of the plurality of base stations, the receiver having N sub receivers, where N is an integer greater than one and each of the N sub receivers is independently tuned to a desired frequency.
Abstract:
Access terminal identification management providing a minimum distance between subnets before reusing subnet identifiers. Mobility criteria evaluation determines when to reassign an access terminal identifier. In one embodiment, the mobility criteria is whether any member of the active set for the access terminal belongs to an originating subnet. In an alternate embodiment, the criteria is whether the access terminal has traveled more than a minimum distance from the originating subnet. When a mobility criteria is violated, the access network assigns a new identifier. In one embodiment, the access terminal identifier is a long code mask based on a subnet identifier. Identifier management applies when crossing sector boundaries in a cellular system, and serves to reduce the ambiguity of mapping CC values to full UATI values, and to avoid overlapping assignments.
Abstract:
The disclosed systems and methods include a native portable communications device having an application module that modifies communications between the portable device and a non-native communications device connected to a non-native communications network. The application module transforms communications between a native standard to a non-native standard to allow interoperability between the native portable communications device and the non-native communications device within the non-native communications network. Further, the application module may modify communications in other manners, such as to apply a security function to the communication. Additionally, the systems and methods may include a communications accessory for switching communications between the application module of the native device, the non-native device, and the non-native network. Thus, the native portable communications device and the associated methods of operation with the application module provide a mobile system that enables modified communications over various communications networks.
Abstract:
Systems and methods consistent with the present invention provide a transaction processing during which a transaction billing event is created. Metadata associated with an application is stored in a transaction manager database. When a wireless device downloads an application, raw transaction information is sent to and stored in the database. The raw transaction data may include a subset of the metadata and additional information included by other devices and/or systems. Billing events are created by correlating the metadata and the raw transaction data. In addition, subscription billing events, such as those having reoccurring charges, are calculated by evaluating those transactions having a subscription transaction type and their associated metadata stored in the database.
Abstract:
The layers and protocols of an air interface layering architecture are designed to be modular and can be modified and upgraded to support new features, perform complex tasks, and implement additional functionality. Prior to commencement of data communication between a first entity (e.g., an access terminal) and a second entity (e.g., a radio network), a set of layers and/or protocols is selected for negotiation. For each selected layer and protocol (i.e., each attribute), a list of attribute values considered acceptable to the first entity is determined. The selected attributes and their associated attribute values are sent from the first entity and, in response, a list of processed attributes and their associated lists of processed attribute values are received. Each list of processed attribute values includes attribute values considered acceptable to the second entity. The layers and protocols in the first entity are then configured in accordance with the received list of processed attributes and their associated processed attribute values. Other features related to configurable layers and protocols are also provided.
Abstract:
Software for use on a client device that is configured for communications via a communications network instantiates a communications function that effects an advertisement download communication link between the client device and an advertisement distribution server system via the communications network, at selected advertisement download times, an advertisement download function that downloads advertisements identified in a playlist(s) generated by at least one playlist server, via the advertisement download communication link, at the selected advertisement download times, an advertisement storage function for storing the downloaded advertisements on a storage medium associated with the client device, and an advertisement display function that effects display of at least selected ones of the stored advertisements.
