Abstract:
An impact attenuation bag has a height-reducing structure in the form of an internal rib that draws the upper and lower surfaces of the bag closer together, reducing the overall height of the bag when inflated as compared with the same bag in the absence of the rib. This gives the bag a flatter resting shape that provides significant performance enhancement by increasing the initial ground contact area and lowering the vehicle assembly center of gravity. As a result, the moment arm is reduced making the payload less likely to roll over. The rib may be a fabric sheet or cord laced in a criss-cross or other lacing pattern that extends from the top of the bag to the bottom.
Abstract:
A fast acting and low leak rate vent for an impact landing bag in which a vent hole is covered by a gas barrier assembly having a flexible membrane and a low gas permeability layer. A flap assembly positioned around the gas barrier assembly includes flaps that are movable between an open position in which the membrane is exposed and a closed position in which the flaps cover and reinforce the gas barrier assembly. An externally actuated flow initiator is associated with a fastening element that retains the flaps in the closed position. Upon landing, the flow initiator is activated to sever the fastening element and release the flaps and the low gas permeability layer. Thereafter, the internal pressure within the landing bag under landing forces causes the membrane to burst, releasing a flow of gas from within the landing bag to attenuate impact.
Abstract:
An inflatable airbag (by mouth or mechanical pump) that remains continuously inflated and deployed for use in situations where complex impact detection sensors and gas generator inflation, deployment devices are not practical or desirable. It is anticipated this device will have most suitable application in the protection of the vulnerable spinal regions of participants in foot launched and ultralight aviation, in particular paraglider pilots. Participants in this aviation sport suffer from an unacceptably high incidence of vertebral fracture, spinal injury and paralysis due to the semi-reclined, seated position adopted in flight, and in utilizing aircraft subject to turbulence induced deflation and collapse at low altitude with resulting ground impact. This device when fashioned into an aerodynamic, L shaped curve and positioned in the rear of the flying harness, covers and protects the upper thigh, buttock, lumbar, thoracic and cervical spine from dorsal impacts.
Abstract:
A flotation device for maintaining an aircraft in a floating and stable condition is provided. The flotation device comprises at least one flotation bladder mounted to the aircraft and an inflation mechanism for inflating the flotation bladder. A method for maintaining an aircraft in a floating condition is also provided.
Abstract:
An autonomous passenger module is releasably carried on a super-sonic aircraft, such as a military fighter jet, for carrying plural passengers on supersonic and near space flights. The passenger module is equipped with passenger service and life support systems to provide oxygen and the like, a parachute system, and a landing airbag or flotation aid system. The module remains mounted on the aircraft throughout a normal flight. In an emergency situation, the module separates from the aircraft by means of releasable connector elements and descends using parachutes. The module provides high passenger capacity at a low cost in a simple manner for commercial supersonic flights using an existing supersonic aircraft as a carrier platform.
Abstract:
The present invention provides an anti-hijacking system. In one embodiment, the anti-hijacking system is used in an airplane cockpit to provide forceful contact to disarm, disable, immobilize or otherwise incapacitate a hostile intruder who has entered the cockpit. The anti-hijacking system includes one or more inflation devices, such as deployable air bags.
Abstract:
A passive restraint system in an aircraft utilizing a seat structure of the aircraft to store a source of pressurized gas or solid fuel necessary to expand the passive restraint is disclosed. The seat structure of the aircraft comprises multiple hollow tubes, and these hollow tubes can be utilized to either store pressurized gas or solid fuel directly, or to house a vessel that stores pressurized gas or solid fuel. Thus, no additional aircraft seat space is required to house a pressurized gas vessel. By using the existing seat structure to house the source of pressurized gas or solid fuel, significant space and weight savings can be realized, both of which are important factors in aircraft seat design.
Abstract:
An airbag system for elevating the fuselage of an aircraft off a landing surface a sufficient degree to allow for emergency egress of passengers and crew through ventral emergency exit doors. An airbag assembly made up of a plurality of independent airbags is disposed within the aircraft. When activated, the airbag system deploys the airbags external of the aircraft that elevate the fuselage of the aircraft a sufficient degree to allow for utilizing the ventral emergency exit doors on the fuselage to enable evacuating the passengers and crew. An activation mechanism is connected to the inflation.devices associated with each of the airbags. The activation mechanism generates an electrical signal which activates the inflation devices, which in turn fill the airbags with a compressed fluid, thus expanding the airbags and lifting the fuselage. A crew member initiates the activation of the airbag system through one or more switches.
Abstract:
An inflatable restraint is disclosed, and includes an elongated poncho having therein an air-tight bladder and a cervical aperture for insertion of the head of the individual. A front portion of the poncho is adapted for juxtaposition with a rear surface of a forward seat and a rear portion is adapted for juxtaposition with and between the back of the torso and a forward surface of a rearward seat when inflated. The front portion is longer than the rear portion and has a larger volumetric displacement when inflated and extends over the front torso and lower extremities of the individual. The rear portion extends over the back torso of the individual. An inflation means inflates the bladder and restrains the individual between the forward and rearward seats for protection of the individual during an emergency while traveling in a vehicle.
Abstract:
An aircraft includes a cockpit permanently connected to a fuselage base. At least one fuselage segment is detachably mounted to the support. In case of an imminent crash the segment is detachable from the remainder of the aircraft and can float to safety after being detached by having at least one parachute and an airbag secured to the segment.
