    Abstract: There is provided an ozonizer with an ozonizer element which has a columnar shaft body, a positive electrode of a platinum net plate which is fitted around an outer surface of the columnar shaft body, an ion exchange membrane fitted around the positive electrode, and a negative electrode of a metal net fitted around the ion exchange membrane. The positive electrode is intermittently wound around the columnar shaft body with a predetermined axial interval or otherwise an intermittent insulator is provided in an axial direction between the positive electrode and the negative electrode. The ozonizer has a tubular passage for permitting water to flow therethrough and housing therein the ozonizer element such that an axis of the ozonizer lies in the flowing direction of the water. Further the ozonizer has a device for applying DC voltage between the positive electrode and the negative electrode so that a discharge portion and non-discharge portion are alternately located in the water flowing direction.

    Abstract: An ozone generator is disclosed. The ozone generator includes a housing forming a tubular-shaped shell. A tubular ceramic electrode is suspended within the tubular-shaped shell of the housing. An end of the electrode protrudes from the tubular-shaped shell of the housing. The electrode, as suspended, forms a annular space of uniform width between the shell and the electrode, which space serves as the discharge gap. A Teflon.TM. retainer grips the end of the electrode protruding from the tubular-shaped shell of the housing. The retainer connects with the housing to maintain the electrode fixed in position within the tubular-shaped shell.

    Abstract: The apparatus described is intended for the treatment of small volumes of room air for the removal of odors. Since the ozone output of the apparatus is calibrated in terms of the readily measured corona current, this type of apparatus can be intelligently applied to odor control problems. If the volume to be treated is known, then the output in mg/hr necessary to produce ozone backgrounds of 0.04 ppm and below can be readily computed. Such concentrations are comparable to the natural background and generally acceptable for continuous human occupation.

    Abstract: Disclosed herein is an apparatus and method for the production of ozone gas comprising: a parallel resonance circuit formed by a high voltage transformer and a companion flexible polymeric corona discharge chamber which encloses an electrode and serves as both a passageway and reservoir for oxygen bearing gas, and a fluid counter-electrode, all contained within an appropriate enclosure. Said corona discharge chamber possesses an electrical reactance which can be varied in order to match the electrical reactance of a companion high voltage transformer so that the components resonate, thereby maximizing the transfer of energy to the corona discharge gap. The dwell of corona discharge is further enhanced by an electrostatic potential incorporated across said tube wall (electret effect). Heat formed in said discharge gap (detrimental to ozone production) is advantageously transferred to said fluid counter-electrode which also serves as an electrolytic connection between said high voltage transformer and said corona discharge chamber. Within said chamber, relatively large volumes of oxygen may be exposed to the high field density, ozone producing, resonating discharges as a consequence of its flexible and linear design. The apparatus and methods described herein permit and encourage the use of intermittent and cyclic application of resonating energy and therefore achieves an improved degree of electrical efficiency. The teachings of the present invention make practical the use of alternative sources of energy for the private and commercial generation of ozone gas.

    Abstract: A discharge device (10) is disclosed which is capable of providing preionizing ultraviolet wave length photons to the area of a gap between the first (15) and second (35) electrodes of the device. The first electrode (15) includes a core (20) of dielectric material, a conductive plate (23) mounted on one surface of the core, and a conductive grid (26) mounted on an opposed surface of the core which faces the second electrode. The application of a negative voltage pulse to the grid (26), while the plate (23) is maintained at substantially ground potential, causes electrons to discharge between the conductors of the grid and the adjacent surface of the dielectric core, and, in doing so, generates photons having wavelengths in the ultraviolet range. The ultraviolet photons, which are emanated in a two dimensionally uniform pattern over the surface of the dielectric core adjacent the grid, cause ionization of the gas within the main discharge gap between the first and second electrodes. The second electrode may be maintained at ground or other potential higher than the grid such that a sufficient potential difference reached between the second electrode and the grid after the preionization will result in a uniform glow discharge of electrons between the two electrodes. This glow discharge is useful for the firing of gas lasers and in certain chemical reactors, such as ozone generators.
