Disclosed is a synchronous control system for effecting a synchronous and superimposed operation among different channels of a multi-channel-control machine tool. A follow-up error amount (.epsilon.3) of a servomotor responsive to a superimposing instruction is simulated, a difference is determined by subtracting the follow-up error amount (.epsilon.3) to the superimposing instruction from a follow-up error amount (.epsilon.2) of a servomotor for a superimposed operation axis (Z2) and the difference is compared with a follow-up error amount (.epsilon.1) of a servomotor for a synchronous operation axis (Z1) to produce an alarm when the comparison indicates the operation of the servomotors is synchronized and superimposed.With this arrangement, a synchronous error can be checked when a superimposed operation of the servomotors is effected.

A machine tool (10) with a rotating cutting tool (24) has a spindle assembly (20,48) mounted for rotation in a longitudinally movable headstock (18). The spindle assembly includes a spindle (48), driven by a motor (50) and an integral machining head (20) having a rotatably mounted drive screw (62). The drive screw carries a radially positionable follower (72) to which is connected a tool block (22) to define a radial slide for supporting the cutting tool. A drive shaft (82) extending through the spindle is in driving engagement with the drive screw such that rotation of the drive shaft relative to the spindle produces rotation of the drive screw and consequential radial movement of the follower and tool block. A motor (76) mounted on the spindle for rotation with the spindle is connected to the drive shaft for rotating it either a clockwise or counterclockwise sense to produce radial movement of the follower and tool block. A counterbalance block (70) is in threaded engagement with a threaded shaft (142) mounted in the machining head in driving connection with the drive shaft for providing dynamic balance. A tool changer assembly (38) is secured to a floor mounted support (46) for changing tools in the tool block.

Apparatus for generating synchronized multi-axis intermittent motion utilizing electronic encoding, memory and a servo controlled positioning system. A plurality of mechanically independent slave shafts are positioned in response to the position of a rotatable master shaft. An analog transducer is attached to the master shaft providing an analog output signal which is fed through an analog-to-digital converter. A digital representation of the master shaft position is provided by the analog-to-digital converter. The digital indication of master shaft position is fed to a plurality of independent digital memory devices each of which provides, in response, a digital position signal indicative of the desired position of an associated slave shaft. The output of each independent digital memory device is fed to a digital-to-analog converter which provides an analog output representative of the desired slave shaft position. A servo controller positions the associated slave shaft in response to the analog signal. A translator can be utilized for combining the digital output of each memory with an analog position signal from a position transducer connected to the associated slave shaft and providing an analog difference or error signal which can be utilized for proper positioning of the slave shaft. A tachometer can be utilized in the slave shaft servo for providing speed feedback information. Other means for speed feedback can be employed either by deriving a speed signal from other parameters, related to speed, or by utilizing the characteristics of the prime mover itself for speed feedback.

In a numerical control system, a method and apparatus for controlling the feedrate of a machine tool as a function of spindle speed (angular velocity). A spindle encoder provides basic feedpulses at a frequency fo as a function of spindle speed. A feedrate generator multiplies the frequency fo by a factor derived from a programmed model velocity in inches per revolution (IPR) and the vectorial departure (D), or its reciprocal, derived from programmed departures along two axes. Thus vectorial velocity is maintained as a function of spindle speed.
