A heavy duty pneumatic radial tire is disclosed, having bead portions with an improved durability. The tire is provided with a carcass of at least one ply, including a carcass body extending between both bead portions of the tire, and turn-up portions which are contiguous with the carcass body and arranged around and radially outwardly of bead wires. In a particular radial region of the tire, the distance G between center lines of the carcass body and the turn-up portion of the carcass is optimized in accordance with relevant dimensional parameters of the tire, to minimize strains and suppress separations in the bead portions.

A pneumatic radial tire having highly durable bead structure is disclosed. One or more carcass ply layers of steel cords are turned up around a bead core from the inside to the outside. A reinforcing strip of steel cords is positioned outwardly adjacent to the turn-ups of carcass plies. A bead filler of approximately triangular sectional shape is disposed at the region enclosed by the carcass plies, the turn-ups of the carcass plies and the reinforcing strip of steel cords. The bead filler comprises high hardness rubber stock and medium hardness rubber stock. A cap of organic textile cord fabric covers an upper end of the reinforcing strip of steel cords. A fin-shaped rubber buffer having a hardness lower than that of the medium hardness rubber stock by 3.degree. to 20.degree. is disposed radially outwardly of the capped end and axially outwardly adjacent to the medium hardness rubber stock. A reinforcing strip of organic textile cords may be further disposed outwardly adjacent to the reinforcing strip of steel cords.

Located laterally outwardly in the bead region are end portions of the carcass ply or plies which are guided upwardly, i.e. radially outwardly. Bead reinforcers are also provided. In order to achieve a great dynamic resilience along with sufficient stiffness of the bead regions, it is proposed pursuant to the present invention that the filaments of the bead reinforcers, and the strength carriers of the end portions of the carcass, be disposed at opposite inclines relative to the radial direction. Furthermore, in the vicinity of their outer ends, these filaments and strength carriers form a smaller angle with the circumferential direction of the tire than do those portions thereof in the bead core region, so that these reinforcing inserts are thus disposed in such a way that they extend in a curved manner.

Tubeless tires for trucks and buses have radial carcass plies of polyester cords turned up around bead wires from the lateral inside to the lateral outside of the carcass walls. Polyester cords of not less than 4,500 d are used for the carcass plies. The compressibility of an inner-bead portion, i.e. that portion of the bead between the bead wire and a bead base is 4% to 35% of the entire inner-bead portion and 7% to 70% of the rubber material portion thereof. The most preferable compressibility is 15% to 20% as to the entire inner-bead portion and 30% to 35% as to the rubber material portion.

A curable composition comprising (1) at least one rubber selected from the group consisting of natural rubber, a diene rubber and a diene copolymer rubber, (2) a sulfide resin as a curing agent having the following general formula: ##STR1## wherein X is methylene group, ethylene group, --S-- or --S--S--, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are independently a C.sub.1-10 alkyl or alkylene group, Y.sup.1 and Y.sup.2 are independently the residue of a phenol compound, p is an integer of 2 to 8, and n is an integer of 2 to 5, (3) a phenolic thermosetting resin and (4) a hardener for hardening said thermosetting resin. The composition shows a low viscosity upon milling and also does not take place scorching and blooming, and can provide a cured rubber having a high dynamic modulus of elasticity with improved workability and processability. The cured rubber is suitable for use in radial tires as bead filler rubber.
