The dried metal hydride-containing paste has a decomposition temperature higher than the temperature present during normal lamp operation. At the end of the lamp life, an increase in lamp temperature decomposes the metal hydride-containing paste and releases hydrogen within the lamp. The presence of hydrogen causes the lamp to extinguish passively without significant end heating or glass cracking.

An electric lamp includes a sealed lamp envelope including a dome region having an inward projection and a neck region sealed to a lamp stem. A lamp subassembly is located within the lamp envelope and includes an arc tube for generating light when electrical energy is applied thereto. A generally cylindrical, light-transmissive shroud is disposed about the arc tube. A frame includes a single support rod extends between the dome and neck regions of the lamp envelope along one side only of the subassembly, and a dome end of the frame engages the inward projection of the lamp envelope. A mounting structure is provided for attaching the arc tube and shroud to the frame. A bulb spacer is provided having first and second segments bearing against an inside surface of the lamp envelope in the neck region for positioning the frame relative to the lamp envelope, and also having a third segment joining the first and second segments, the third segment being spaced away from the inside surface of the lamp envelope. The frame is attached to the third segment. Electrical leads couple electrical energy through the lamp stem to the arc tube. The electrical leads and the lamp stem are electrically isolated from the frame, and the lamp subassembly is mechanically supported within the lamp envelope solely by the dome end of the frame, the bulb spacer and the leads.

The lamp is designed to have a cataphoretic driving parameter (CDP) value of less than 150. The CDP is defined as the product of the arc current in amperes, times the arc gap length in centimeters, divided by square of the inner diameter of the arc tube in centimeters.

A high intensity discharge lamp system includes an AC supply for a chamber within which a plasma conductor is created to generate light. In order to confine charged particles within the chamber and to inhibit migration and loss thereof, a DC circuit taps power from the AC supply and produces a DC potential which is applied to relatively large-surface components in the vicinity of the plasma chamber. Properly polarized, the large-surface components, such as a reflector and a conductive housing, refractor or door, produces electric fields which inhibit migration of the charged particles. The result is improved color and light output as well as increased lamp life.

A mercury vapor discharge lamp such as a negative glow discharge lamp includes a light-transmitting envelope containing a noble gas fill material. An anode electrode and a cathode electrode are spacedly located within the envelope. An amalgam-forming material for regulating the mercury vapor pressure of the lamp is disposed within the envelope. In order to increase the mercury vapor pressure and consequently the light output of the lamp at low ambient temperatures, a heating element is disposed within the envelope and in close thermal proximity to the amalgam-forming material. A thermostatic switch coupled to the heating element is activated when the temperature adjacent the amalgam-forming material is below a predetermined temperature.

The low-pressure sodium discharge lamp according to the invention has a U-shaped discharge tube (1) with seals (4, 5), through which current-supply conductors (6, 7) extend to electrodes (8, 9). A supporting member (14) fixes the discharge tube (1) in an outer bulb (10). Upright collars (18, 19) at the supporting member (14), which surround the seals (4, 5) throughout their lengths, prevent the discharge tube from becoming leaky at high-frequency operation and the lamp from reaching the end of its life prematurely.
