    摘要: An optical disc in which a physical address of each smallest recording unit and a recorded address increase or decrease on first and second recording layers, and a method of identifying the recording layers. Embodiments are provided for discs having first and second recording layers with a same or an opposite track spiral direction. Physical addresses of the smallest recording units and a recorded address are increased or decreased between an inner radius and an outer radius of a recording layer in a manner which enables a reproducing and/or a recording device to more rapidly reproduce and/or record data on the disc. A physical address of the smallest recording units on the first recording layer is made different from a physical address of the smallest recording units on the second recording layer.

    摘要: A recording medium having a spare area for defect management, and a method and apparatus for allocating and assigning the spare area. A plurality of zones are formed as one group without prescribing the relationship between a zone and a group. Spare areas include a spare area for slipping replacement and a spare area for linear replacement. The spare are for slipping replacement is first allocated, and the spare area for linear replacement is allocated according to the size of an area remaining after the spare area for slipping replacement is used and the purpose for which a disc is used. When the spare area for linear replacement becomes deficient during use of the disc, a supplementary spare area for linear replacement is allocated in sequence from the rearmost of a logical file area, such that the spare area can be more flexibly and effectively allocated.

    摘要: An encoding and decoding apparatus and method thereof includes first and second soft encoders, a transmission channel, and first and second soft decoders. The first soft encoder performs a first soft encoding of input data to correct errors in the input data and outputting first soft-encoded data. The second soft encoder receives the first soft-encoded data, performs a second soft encoding to determine a success or failure of the encoding of the first soft-encoded data, and outputs second soft-encoded data. The first soft decoder soft-decodes data input through a transmission channel and corresponds to the second soft encoding, and outputs first soft-decoded data. The second soft decoder receives the first soft-decoded data, soft-decodes the first soft-decoded data corresponding to the first soft encoding, and outputs second soft-decoded data and additional information indicating the success or failure of the decoding of the first soft-decoded data.

    摘要: An optical recording medium allowing data to be recorded on, erased from, and reproduced from, and storing information about power levels of an erase pulse. The recorded erase pattern information may include information about power levels of first and last pulses of an erase pattern for erasing data. The first and last pulses of the erase pattern can be differently set depending on the differing kind of recording layer or layers of a disk or differing kinds of disks and recorded in a reproducible only area or rewritable area of the optical recording medium. Thus, by presetting the appropriate erase power levels, the time required for selecting an optimal erase power for the optical recording medium can be considerably reduced.
