Abstract:
In one embodiment of the invention, a display is provided and includes a plurality of interferometric display elements. The display further includes at least one diffuser. Optical properties of the diffuser are selected to reduce color shift of the display when viewed from at least one angle.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for reducing perceived color shift as a function of viewing angle is disclosed. One embodiment is a display device that includes a color light modulator and a color filter. The filter is configured to filter wavelengths of light that would be perceived as color shifted light when reflected by the modulator at an off-axis viewing angle. Another embodiment includes a color light modulator and a color light source configured to provide light having a spectral content that lacks the wavelengths that would be perceived as color shifted light by a view of the display at an off-axis viewing angle. Another embodiment are methods of making such display devices.
Abstract:
Disclosed is new architecture of microelectromechanical system (MEMS) device. The device has a partially reflective optical layer, a deformable mechanical layer and a mirror layer, each of which forms an independent electrode. A support post separates the optical layer from the mechanical layer. The mirror layer is located and movable between a first position and a second position, which are located between the optical layer and the mechanical layer. The mirror is spaced from the support post, and mirror is responsive to voltages applied to the three electrodes, thereby moving between the first position and the second position. By applying various combinations of voltage differences between the optical layer and the mirror, and between the mirror and the mechanical layer, the location of the mirror between the first and second positions is tunable throughout the space between the two positions. The tunable MEMS device can be used as an analog display element or analog electrical device such as a tunable capacitor. The MEMS device of the disclosed architecture can also be operated in a non-analog manner.
Abstract:
Embodiments of MEMS devices comprise a conductive movable layer spaced apart from a conductive fixed layer by a gap, and supported by rigid support structures, or rivets, overlying depressions in the conductive movable layer, or by posts underlying depressions in the conductive movable layer. In certain embodiments, both rivets and posts may be used. In certain embodiments, these support structures are formed from rigid inorganic materials, such as metals or oxides. In certain embodiments, etch barriers may also be deposited to facilitate the use of materials in the formation of support structures which are not selectively etchable with respect to other components within the MEMS device.
Abstract:
Disclosed are apparatus and methods for fabricating a static interferometric display device. A plurality of sputtering modules is used to form static interferometric elements on a substrate. These elements each have a plurality of interferometric sub-elements that each has an interferometric stack. A first sub-element of each element is formed so that an interferometric modulation of light due to the first element's stack transmits at a first color, and a second sub-element of each element is formed so that a second color is transmitted. The sub-elements of each element are arranged with respect to each other so that all of the elements appear as a third color to a user if all the sub-elements of each element are left unmasked. A printing system is then used to mask one or more sub-elements of one or more elements so as to form, with the elements, a static image having multiple colors.

Abstract:
In certain embodiments, a device is provided that utilizes both interferometrically reflected light and transmitted light. Light incident on the device is interferometrically reflected from a plurality of layers of the device to emit light in a first direction, the interferometrically reflected light having a first color. Light from a light source is transmitted through the plurality of layers of the device to emit from the device in the first direction, the transmitted light having a second color.
Abstract:
MEMS devices include materials which are used in LCD or OLED fabrication to facilitate fabrication on the same manufacturing systems. Where possible, the same or similar materials are used for multiple layers in the MEMS device, and use of transparent conductors for partially transparent electrodes can be avoided to minimize the number of materials needed and minimize fabrication costs. Certain layers comprise alloys selected to achieve desired properties. Intermediate treatment of deposited layers during the manufacturing process can be used to provide layers having desired properties.
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus for controlling flexion in a spinal segment of a patient include performing a spinal fusion procedure on a pair of adjacent vertebrae in the spinal segment and implanting a constraint device into the patient. Adjusting length or tension in the constraint device allows the constraint device to provide a force a force resistant to flexion of the spinal segment undergoing fusion. The constraint device also modulates loads borne by the spinal segment undergoing fusion or tissue adjacent thereto.
Abstract:
A separable modulator architecture is disclosed. The modulator has a mirror suspended from a flexible layer over a cavity. The flexible layer also forms supports and support posts for the mirror. An alternative separable modulator architecture has a mirror suspended over a cavity. The modulator is supported by supports and support posts. The support posts comprise a flexible layer over support post plugs. A bus structure may be formed upon the flexible layer arranged over the support posts.
