    摘要: An example of the invention classifies disks drives based on their purpose and associating power-saving policies in multiple classes. The system implements Power On Demand, where a reduced power mode is enabled for every individual component of a storage subsystem. In addition, an embodiment of this invention extends a few power modes used in the prior art and allows almost infinite number of power modes when instructing a disk drive (via its I/O interface such as a SCSI or fiber channel interface) to enter a certain power saving mode. Furthermore, an embodiment of invention teaches a system and methods to save power in a disk system comprising a plurality of disk controllers and a plurality of disk drives, arranged in a plurality of arrays, where each array includes several (e.g., 4-16) disk drives.

    摘要: A method and a system are provided for displaying information on a data storage cartridge. The data storage cartridge includes a driver circuit coupled to a display and a cartridge memory. The driver circuit activates the display on the data storage cartridge. In response to the activation of the display on the data storage cartridge the driver circuit obtains information from the cartridge memory of the data storage cartridge. The driver circuit displays at least a portion of the information obtained from the cartridge memory on the display of the data storage cartridge. In one embodiment the data storage cartridge is a tape cartridge.

    摘要: An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for automatically backing up a dynamically created resource group. One embodiment of the apparatus includes an event module, a resource group module, and a backup module. The event module receives an event notification of an unanticipated system event, such as a system failure or similar event. The resource group module dynamically creates a resource group made up of resources (files, directories, applications, databases, etc.) in response to the event notification. The resource group may be created based on which resources are within a specified classification and have a timestamp within a specified time range. The backup module initiates a backup operation to copy the resource group to a backup location. The backup module backs up as much of the resource group as possible within the time between the resource group creation and the time that the system may become unavailable.

    摘要: Improved reliability for multi-layer media is providing by the present invention. A data stream U is received for recording to a multi-layer rotating storage medium, the data stream U comprising a sequence of data bits. Each data bit U(J) is encoded into X representation bits. A first representation bit B(1,J) is recorded onto a first layer of the storage media, the second representation bit B(2,J) is recorded onto a second layer of the storage media, etc. When a request to read the recorded data U from the storage media is subsequently received, a plurality of the X representation bits are read back from the storage media and are decoded into the original data bit U(J). In one embodiment, encoding may be performed with a convolution encoding algorithm and decoding with a PRML decoding algorithm. In another embodiment, Reed Solomon encoding/decoding may be employed.
