摘要: The present invention concerns methods and apparatus for implementing context-dependent security for files and other computer system resources. In particular, methods and apparatus of the present invention implement context-based permissions that are used in context-dependent file security. In examples of the present invention, the context-based permissions may allow access to a file only when an attempt to access the file is made at a certain time of day, or from an authorized computer system, or from a computer having a certain application program installed. In general terms, the context-based permissions may specify time, location and application information that either alone or in combination may be used to restrict access to a file.

摘要: The present invention concerns methods and apparatus that categorize states of computer systems selected to receive state-dependent maintenance activities as a prelude to the performance of those maintenance activities. In methods and apparatus of the present invention, it is determined, for example, that a certain version of an application program operating in computer systems having a specific operating system will be updated. A signature corresponding to the combination of the application program and operating system is incorporated in a software agent. The software agent is designed to poll computer systems in order to identify targets drawn from a population of computer systems that have states corresponding to the signature incorporated in the software agent. All computer systems maintenance activity performed on them.

摘要: A method and system for facilitating the selection of icons. Those icons which are next likely to be used are selected and automatically moved towards a cursor thereby facilitating selection of the icons. Additionally, those icons likely to be used or other icons selected by a user may track the cursor such that those icons are always close to the cursor and capable of being easily selected. Further, in order to facilitate selection of icons, icons are provided with the capability of announcing themselves when a cursor comes close to the icon. In addition, it is possible to reduce the amount of clutter on a computer display so that icons may be easily selected. In order to clean up a computer display, icons which are least likely to be used are faded, eliminated or shrunk to a smaller size. In another embodiment, icons that are not used very often may disappear into a master icon and further, icons which have a conceptual relationship between them may be linked by a visual graphical representation.

摘要: A cursor control/data input device for a computer display system which utilizes a conventional X-Y mouse provided with a third Z with axis data generating mechanism. The mouse may be used with any non-specific support surface and would have conventional X-Y data generating wheels or a rotating ball with appropriate pick-up elements to generate the X-Y coordinate data. Third, or Z, coordinate data is produced by a third instrumentality in the mouse body, preferably operable by the operator's thumb or index finger. Means comprising a pressure sensitive button mounted on the surface of the mouse, or alternatively means actuated by the insertion of the operator's finger into a hole provided in the mouse's body, generate said Z coordinate data. Movement of the finger in the hole is measurable by any of a number of different instrumentalities.

摘要: Systems and methods are provided for supporting the use of hypertext links in documents such as word processor documents. A given word processor document is scanned for link representations to sources that are external to the word processor document. These identified link representations are then checked for validity and functionality, and the external sources are also checked for content and accessibility. In order to facilitate checking the content of the external sources, the word processor document is appended to include all or part of the content of each linked external source. The appended information is then used for subsequent content comparisons. Checking of the link representations and external sources is used to produce a current validity status for each link representations. The validity status of the links within a given document are indicated to an author or reader using visual queues by modifying non-link aspects of the word processor document, by modifying the appearance of a file name or file folder associated with the word processor document or by modifying the appearance of a cursor used in conjunction with the word processor document.

摘要: Embodiments of the present invention provide an approach for enhancing computer interaction challenge-response tests (e.g., Completely Automatic Public Turing Test to Tell Computers and Humans Apart, or CAPTCHA). Furthermore, embodiments of the present invention provide an approach for introducing advertising in such challenge-response tests, such that users are presented with opportunities to learn about or reinforce brands. In a typical embodiment, when a user attempts to access content (e.g., web content), the user will be presented with a CAPTCHA test. The CAPTCHA test typically includes an advertisement (e.g., logo, label, etc.) and an associated question for the user to answer. Along these lines, the advertisement is generally selected based on the user's demographics (e.g., interests, gender, age, etc.). If the user successfully responds to the question and/or responds within a certain amount of time, a reward can be determined (e.g., access to the content, preferred placement in a queue for computing resources, etc.). In one embodiment, a cumulative points total can be maintained for the user based on cumulative responses to CAPTCHA tests. In this embodiment, the CAPTCHA tests presented to the user can have increasing levels of difficulty with corresponding rewards.
