    Abstract: In a wireless system in which a base station provides a time division duplex (TDD) air interface having a TDD frame configuration, a method and system for controlling whether a user equipment device (UE) operates in a first mode in which the UE sets up and engages in voice call communication via the base station or rather operates in a second mode in which the UE tunes away from the base station to set up and engage in voice call communication via another base station, such as under a different air interface protocol. The method involves determining whether traffic demand for the air interface exceeds a threshold level, and if so, causing the UE to operate in the second mode rather than in the first mode. Further, the method involves setting the threshold level based on the TDD frame configuration of the air interface.

    Abstract: A method and system for a base station to manage air interface communications with a wireless client device (WCD) served by the base station, taking into account whether the WCD is a relay-WCD that provides wireless backhaul connectivity for a relay base station. The base station will determine whether the served WCD is a relay-WCD, and based on a determination that the served WCD is a relay-WCD, the base station will responsively invoke a process to help expedite air interface communications with the served WCD, in an effort to reduce the total delay resulting from the wireless relay arrangement. In particular, based on the served WCD being a relay-WCD, and perhaps based on the relay-WCD facilitating a threshold extent of delay-sensitive communication, the base station will invoke transmission time interval (TTI) bundling, to help expedite the air interface communications between the base station and the relay-WCD.

    Abstract: A method and system for disabling handover of a wireless communication device (WCD) that is acting as a relay WCD in relay base station. The relay WCD may receive from its serving base station a parameter message including one or more sets of handover threshold parameter values, where the relay WCD compares measurements of power received from one or more base stations with one or more handover threshold values to determine if a condition is met for sending receive-power measurement messages to the serving base station. Based on the one or more sets of handover threshold values, the relay WCD may infer what capability the serving base station has for distinguishing between relay WCDs and non-relay WCDs. Based on the inference, the relay WCD may control its reporting to the serving base station of receive-power measurement reports relating to the one or more sets of handover threshold values.

    Abstract: In one aspect, an exemplary method involves a WCD: (i) determining a likelihood of roaming, wherein the likelihood of roaming indicates a likelihood that the WCD will be handed off from a preferred coverage area to a non-preferred coverage area; and (ii) using the likelihood of roaming as a basis for managing an active set of the WCD. In particular, the WCD may manage its active set by setting at least one active-set parameter affecting the number of active sectors in an active set of the WCD, and then maintaining its active set according to the setting of the at least one active-set parameter. According to an exemplary embodiment, a WCD will make an effort to increase the number of sectors in its active set when the likelihood of roaming is greater, and vice versa.

    Abstract: A base station may use the quality of service (QoS) levels of the bearer connections of user equipment devices (UEs) as a basis to allocate paging resources to the UEs. In one example, a UE may receive from the base station a message defining a plurality of recurring paging occasions. The plurality of paging occasions may include a first set of paging occasions and a second set of paging occasions that are mutually exclusive. The UE may then make a decision, based on a QoS level of a bearer connection of the UE, of whether to monitor one or more paging occasions of the first set of paging occasions or rather to monitor one or more paging occasions of the second set of paging occasions.     Abstract: A method and system for pre-configuring a UE with timing advance for use in communication with a handover target. When a UE is being served by a handover source, the handover source transmits to a handover target a measurement request that specifies an uplink reference signal that the UE will provide, and the handover target evaluates that uplink reference signal to determine a timing advance for the UE and reports the timing advance in a response to the handover source. As the handover source then directs the UE to hand over to the handover target, the handover source provides the UE with an indication of the timing advance provided by the handover target. The UE may then transition to be served by the handover target and to make use of the indicated timing advance.
