Suspension mechanism for a sliding door for a rapid transit type railway car comprises a unified two-part track which is anchored only at its ends to the car body. The two parts of each track comprise a track base portion with a seat extending lengthwise therein, and a track bar portion seated in the seat and secured therein. Each door is suspended from its individual track by a pair of hangers mounted one adjacent each end of the top of the door and both hangers in endwise sliding relation on the bar portion of the track. Since each track is supported only at its ends, the weight of the door suspended therefrom tends to bow the track downward, and this bowing or sagging effect varies as the hangers move back and forth along the track during each opening and closing operation of the door. This invention compensates for the sagging effect caused by the weight and movement of a door along its track by subjecting the base portion of the track to pre-bowing stresses within the elastic limit of the track base material during the cutting of a straight seat for the track bar portion, so that when these bowing stresses are removed, the base portion springs back to its normal straight condition, thereby causing the seat to assume an upwardly bowed or arched condition. When the track bar portion is seated and secured in its seat, it assumes a slightly arched condition, which is reduced toward a straight condition by the weight of the door suspended therefrom by its hangers. The magnitude and application point or points for the pre-bowing stresses for curving the base while cutting the seat in order to provide maximum straightness of the track bar portion in operation are carefully arrived at, preferably by means of computer calculations.

THE PAERTS ARE NEXT DESCALED TO REMOVE OXIDES BY IMMERSION FOR 5-10 MINUTES IN AN NONAQUEOUS ACETIC-SULFURIC-HYDROFLUORIC ACID BATH WHICH IS THE ELECTROLYTE IN AN ELECTROLYTIC SYSTEM IN WHICH IS TITANIUM PART IS THE ANODE AND THE CATHODE ELECTRODE IS FORMED OF CARBON OR COPPER. FROM 2-3 VOLTS ARE APPLIED ACROSS THE ELECTRODES IN DESCALING THE PANEL FACING SHEETS, AND FROM 4-5 VOLTS ARE USED IN DESCALING THE HONEYCOMB CORE WHICH IS ACTIVATED BY THIS TREATMENT AND THEREBY PREPARED FOR ELECTROPLATING TO RECEIVE ONE OR MORE PLATING LAYERS OF DIFFERENT METALS, THE ACTIVATED PARTS ARE BRIGHTENED BY IMMERSION FOR 1-5 MINUTES IN AN AQUEOUS NITRICBORIC-HYDROFLUORIC ACID BATH.

Recuperator having unusually high heat transfer capability is made up of casing with headers, and matrix having tubes extending between headers and fins integral with tubes. In preferred form a continuous web of metal foil, such as stainless steel, is repeatedly folded on itself to form multiple spaced corrugations extending from one side of web. Each corrugation is pinched together at its open edge and seam welded to produce tube integral with web. Web is then wrapped on itself in spiral arrangement to produce matrix of multiplicity of very small parallel tubes. The tubes of each wrap are in contact with the web of the adjacent wrap but not secured thereto. All portions brace each other, and integral fins provide maximum heat transfer. Tubes are rigidly connected only to headers, and mid portion of matrix is free to work in response to temperature gradients, greatly reducing localized stresses.

System includes a shroud surrounding a jet engine with a tail pipe extending rearward of the aft end of the shroud. A nozzle coaxial with the tail pipe is slidably mounted to the shroud for axial movement. In first, cruising, position the forward portion of the nozzle overlaps the tail pipe and the forward end of the nozzle is adjacent to the aft end of the shroud to form a continuous streamlined body. The inner wall of the nozzle aft portion includes a forward section which conforms to the exit end of the tail pipe and converges rearward. The aft section is generally cylindrical but may be slightly convergent or divergent. The entire aft portion of the nozzle comprises front hinged petals which swing outward to increase the gas flow path area and also to form a convergent-divergent nozzle for afterburner operation. The nozzle slides rearward to second, reversing, position with its forward end adjacent to the exit plane of the tail pipe. Lateral openings are exposed when the nozzle is moved axially rearward and the blocker doors are opened to form outflow passages for exhaust gas to produce reverse thrust. Blocker doors and deflector doors form parts of the inner and outer wall at the openings and are pivoted on transverse axes. Linkage anchored to the shroud swings blocker doors inward in response to rearward movement, and linkage between blocker doors and deflector doors swings latter in response to swinging of former. When deployed, the deflector doors form continuations of the blocker doors to guide the outflow beyond the contour of the nozzle.

The free end of the bar projects from the other side of the part and is slidably disposed in the bushing, one edge of which is initially engaged with an edge of the aperture in the part. A pull plate is engaged with the free end of the bar so that retraction of the ram into its cylinder causes the pull plate to draw the bushing into the aperture in the part.
