The present invention is directed to a blown film extrusion apparatus in which film is extruded as a tube from an annular die and then pulled along a predetermined path. The improved blown film extrusion apparatus includes a system for gauging and controlling the surface of the extruded film tube, which includes a number of components which cooperate together. At least one transducer is provided and positioned adjacent the extruded film tube for transmitting interrogating pulses to, and receiving interrogating pulses from, the extruded film tube, and for producing a signal corresponding to a detected position of the extruded film tube. A control system is provided for substituting a filtered position signal derived from a dynamic filtering process in lieu of the detected position signal. An air flow controller is provided for varying a quantity of air within the extruded film tube in response to the control system for urging the extruded film tube to a desired position.

A startup control apparatus according to the invention comprises an extruder for supplying an insulating material around a core conductor, a take-up device for taking up the insulated wire, a diameter measuring device for measuring an outside diameter of the insulated wire and a processor for monitoring and controlling the line startup process. In a method of controlling the startup process of the wire insulating line, the processor calculates a target speed ratio r between the extruder and take-up device, performs a first correction in which a demanded take-up speed CA' is increased by a predetermined increment .DELTA.CA if a measured wire diameter D is equal to or greater than a target wire diameter D.sub.0, followed by a second correction in which a demanded extruder speed EX' is increased by a predetermined increment .DELTA.Emax only if a target extruder speed x obtained by multiplying the increased demanded take-up speed CA' by the target speed ratio r is greater than the demanded extruder speed EX'.

At least one transducer, preferably ultrasonic, is mounted adjacent the extruded film tube for transmitting and receiving interrogating pulses along paths normal to the extruded film tube, and for producing a current position signal corresponding to the circumference of the extruded film tube. The current position signal is continuously compared with at least one previous position signal, preferably with a computer program resident in a controller memory. If at least one preselected condition is violated, the current position signal is disregarded in favor of an estimated position signal. The quantity of air within the extruded film tube is varied in response to either the current position signal or the estimated position signal to maintain the extruded film tube at a preselected circumference.

An extrusion drive control system for control of extrusion process machinery driven elements. A drive interface unit is adapted for use with any of a variety of drive motors and regulators. The interface unit accepts analog condition information signals from the drive motor and regulator, having any of a plurality of predetermined input characteristics, and provides corresponding digital signals having characteristics that are invariant with respect to the particular input characteristics. The interface unit has a communication channel for receiving digital control signals and for outputting digital signals indicating drive operating conditions. The low power digital circuitry and communications channel are protected from the high voltage and high power connections to the drive and drive regulator.Extrusion control means comprises the interface unit together with a drive control module, which permits input of control signals including speed set and ratio set, and permits display of at least one of the operating conditions. The drive control module has an internal data bus and a communications channel connected to the data bus and to the interface unit communications channel.For the control of an extrusion line process, having a plurality of driven elements which have related desired operating speeds, a control system comprises a similar plurality of extrusion control means, all connected to a controller, together with another drive control module for the input of a line speed setting. The controller responds to the input line speed setting and the operating conditions of the driven elements to output appropriate digital control signals to the driven elements to control them to operate at the desired related speeds. The interface unit outputs appropriate analog control signals to the drive units.

A plastics extruder in operative association with a control arrangement is disclosed. The plastics extruder includes a screw extruder, a screen downstream of the screw extruder, a throttle located between the screw extruder and the screen, a moulding tool downstream of the screen, and a melt index measuring device. The measuring device includes a metering pump whose rotational speed is controllable and which is provided with a rotational speed indicator, a measuring nozzle disposed in a sample flow channel, and pressure and temperature sensors connected to the sample flow channel directly upstream of the inlet of the measuring nozzle. The sample flow channel is adapted to be located downstream of the screen pack and upstream of the moulding tool. For the purpose of regulating the viscosity of the plastics material melted in the screw extruder, the throttle cross-section is variable by a servomotor connected to the output of a programmable two-coordinate controller. The characteristic of the controller provides a desired value output and can be predetermined as a temperature-pressure characteristic when the metering pump is operated with constant delivery, or as a temperature-delivery characteristic when the metering pump is operated with a constant pressure drop via the measuring nozzle while the temperature sensor is connected to one of two actual value inputs of the two coordinate controller. Either the pressure sensor or the rotational speed indicator is connected to the second actual value input.
