    摘要: A fiber optic polarization maintaining apparatus for use in fabrication of fused optical couplers, where the fused optical couplers include first and second optical fibers which each have a principle axis. A light launching source is coupled through a lens into a first end of a selected one of the first and second optical fibers. A piezoelectric element in combination with a solenoid applies external stress in the form of an AC modulation signal to the selected one of the first and second optical fibers. A rotating apparatus rotates the selected one of the first and second optical fibers during modulation. Apparatus for collimating light is coupled to a second end of the selected fiber. Apparatus for analyzing the collimated light is coupled to the collumating apparatus, apparatus for detecting power is coupled to the analyzing means, and an output of the power detecting apparatus is coupled to an apparatus for determining when the principle axis of the selected fiber is aligned in the direction of the externally applied stress by detecting a null output from the power detecting apparatus.

    摘要: This invention relates to a method of drawing twist-free optical fibers; it is particularly useful for drawing polarization retaining single-mode optical fibers having azimuthal inhomogeneities. There is applied to the fiber, during the drawing thereof, a coating having a non-circular cross-section, the azimuthal inhomogeneity of the fiber being positioned in a substantially constant orientation with respect to the non-circular cross-section of the coating. In another embodiment, a plurality of fibers having azimuthal inhomogeneities are drawn from a plurality of preforms that are properly oriented in the draw furnace. The fibers are drawn through the same coater so that the azimuthal inhomogeneity of each fiber is oriented in a substantially constant relationship with respect to the azimuthal inhomogeneities of the remaining fibers in the coating.

    摘要: A fiber laser sensor is comprised of two fiber lasers which are each optically coupled to a third fiber so that energy is exchanged between each of the laser fibers and the third fiber. The coupling is accomplished by arranging the laser fibers parallel to and on either side of a third fiber and properly spacing the three fibers to produce optical coupling along the length of the fibers. The central fiber ends are non-reflective so that light generated by one of the lasers and coupled to the central fiber is lost except for a small fraction of the energy transferred to the other laser. Accordingly, the structure operates with the least loss when the two lasers oscillate at a common frequency but 180.degree. out-of-phase. The resonant cavities of the two fiber lasers are made non-identical by making the path length one cavity slightly longer than the other to produce Vernier tuning of the laser resonant frequency orders relative to each other with only one common resonant frequency. The device can be used as a sensor because the common laser output frequency is sensitive to changes in the optical path length of either or both of the laser cavities.

    摘要: Systems and methods for a resonant fiber optic gyroscope with a polarizing crystal waveguide coupler are provided. In one embodiment, an optical fiber resonator comprises: a polarizing single crystal material having a first crystal lattice axis; a first waveguide formed in the crystal material; a second waveguide formed in the crystal material running parallel to the first waveguide; and an optical fiber sensing coil. The first waveguide comprises a bend that approaches the second waveguide defining a coupling region between the first and second waveguides. The first and second waveguides are polarized to guide light having a polarization state aligned to the first crystal lattice axis. The second waveguide and the sensing coil are coupled into a resonator configuration forming a ring resonator, the second waveguide comprising a first port coupled to a first end of the coil, and a second port coupled to a second end of the coil.
