A hitch for connecting a trailer to a tow vehicle includes a hitch bar which projects from the tow vehicle and a hitch box which receives the end of the hitch bar and is coupled to one trailer through a hitch ball and a socket-type coupler. The hitch bar has a shank provided along its four sides with beveled surfaces that are presented outwardly and rearwardly. The hitch box, on the other hand, has a box-like enclosure provided with a forwardly presented open end through which the shank of the hitch bar projects. The enclosure furthermore contains beveled surfaces which conform to the beveled surfaces on the hitch bar shank and indeed seat against those surfaces when the hitch bar is fully inserted into the hitch box. The beveled surfaces of the hitch bar and box are maintained in this seated condition by over center clamps, and when so seated, the hitch box will not shift relative to the hitch bar. The beveled surfaces however facilitate connecting the hitch bar to the hitch box while the latter is coupled to the trailer, for they guide the hitch box into precise alignment with the hitch bar when the hitch bar is forced rearwardly into the hitch box.

The axle is removably received within a swivel housing pivotably mounted to the tongue bar of a trailer, and pivotable to position the wheel between raised position above the tongue bar, a lowered position below the tongue bar, and intermediate positions therebetween. The trailer swivel is secured at each position by a spring loaded locking pin carried on the swivel housing. The axle swivels within the swivel housing to permit the trailer to be maneuverably positioned while the trailer tongue is supported on the wheel rim and tire.

A tow bar assembly for use with automotive vehicles for enabling one vehicle to be towed by another and wherein the hitch bar is laterally and pivotably adjustable by being attached to a self-centering sleeve which is slideably disposed about a cross bar that is secured to the front end of the trailing vehicle. The tow bar assembly allows the hitch carried by the hitch bar to be raised and urged forwardly and laterally so that the hitch may be engaged with the hitch ball of the towing vehicle without having to have the vehicles in perfect alignment. Minor movement of the trailing vehicle will thereafter automatically cause the centering sleeve to slideably traverse the cross bar thereby allowing the receiver hitch bar to become automatically centered and locked into proper towing position.

In the disclosure document DE-OS No. 31 49 700 the theory is put forward that the effective point of attachment of a trailer opposite the towing vehicle can be transferred in the direction of the center of gravity of the towing vehicle. The invention concerns itself with the actual possibility of the transfer while taking structural conditions into consideration. In this respect, the invention shows that at least the joints located at the trailer are to be arranged at a lower level than the ball head of a normal trailer coupling. The distance in height should be considerable, for instance approximately 75 mm. However, since this position of the effective coupling point is not accessible for structural reasons, the hitherto customary ball-headed coupling part located at the rear of the tractor vehicle is kinematically bridged by connecting two joints associated with the tractor vehicle to two joints associated with the trailer vehicle via connecting bars to form a four-joint arrangement such that the straight lines running in the longitudinal direction intersect at the desired effective coupling point.

A coupling device for hitching a trailer to a vehicle such as an agricultural tractor comprises a frame for attachment to the underside of the vehicle, and a guideway carried by the frame which can be moved (e.g. pivotally) downwardly when the frame is attached under the vehicle. The guideway is adapted to receive and guide a trailer-mounted tow-bar assembly from a rearward to a forward location. When in the forward location, which is preferably in front of the vehicle's rear axle, latching means can be actuated to lock the tow-bar assembly in its forward location. The latching means can be actuated by upward movement of the guideway. The coupling device includes provision for pitch, roll and yaw movements between vehicle and trailer.

The joining apparatus connects to the load bars of the standard 3-point hitch and includes a pivotable connection located in the middle of a crossbar that connects the ends of the load bars. Tie bars are mounted at the pivotable connection and to the 3-point hitch connection points on the implement.
