    摘要: To the end of eliminating the problems arising from substantially rigid connection between a front wheel set and a rear wheel set in a four-wheel drive vehicle, there is provided a power transmission system in which a speed-dependent power transmission device is provided between the front wheel set and the rear wheel set so that both the wheel sets are substantially rigidly connected to each other in a low speed range and rotational power is transmitted only from the front wheel set to the rear wheel set in a high speed range. The power transmission device of this kind can be conveniently formed by a pair of one-way clutch elements which are connected between an input member and an output member in a mutually parallel relationship; one of the one-way clutch elements transmitting power from the input member to the output member in both the high and the low speed range while the other one-way clutch element transmits power only from the output member to the input member in the low speed range but does not transmit power in either direction in the high speed range. This speed-dependency can be accomplished by using one-way clutch sprag elements each having a gravitational center offset from its center of rolling motion for wedging between the input member and the output member.

    摘要: A differential drive unit has separate drive shafts extending from a housing. Respective drive plates for each shaft differentially receive rotational power from the housing as such housing rotates. Respective wedges transfer housing rotational power to the respective drive plates, upon engaging inside diameter portions of the housing. Such engagement forces the respective wedges down into contact and frictional engagement with one of the respective drive plates axially inward therefrom. The wedges are carried in circumferential slots defined through the circumference of a cage assembly, which includes an annular member located between the outside diameter of the drive plates and the inside diameter of the housing. Wedges within a given slot include a pair of wedge elements joined together with a spring under compression. Free-wheeling of a drive shaft speed is permitted whenever its respective drive plate, rotating at a speed faster than the housing, advances a trailing wedge element of a pair out of engagement with the housing engagement areas by compressing the corresponding spring between such pair of elements. Such free-wheeling does not affect drive engagement of the other drive plate, which continues to be driven so long as it is rotating at the same or a slower speed than the housing because a wedge member longitudinally aligned with such other drive plate continues to transfer rotational drive power thereto from the housing.

    摘要: A drive mechanism of a front-wheel drive vehicle adapted to selectively drive the rear wheels includes an overrunning clutch mounted coaxially with the rear axleshafts. The clutch and drive mechanism are lubricated by way or ports formed in the casing that carry lubricant thrown radially outward by a bevel pinion rotating through the oil bath to a chamber that is baffled to permit only a portion of the lubricant to flow from the chamber through bearings that support the rear axleshafts. Helical recesses are formed on a portion of the axleshafts and pump lubricant from the chamber axially inward into interior abutting surfaces of members that rotate relative to adjacent members. The pressure head produced by the hydraulic pump, according to this invention, forces the fluid through the roller-race assembly and through spline connections radially outward against a drag connection between the race and a ground connector. The lubricant is pumped radially outward and carried in that direction toward the oil ports formed in the casing by a bevel pinion rotating within the oil sump.
