A frequency management scheme for a hybrid communications/positioning device, such as a cellular/GPS or other combined device, generates a local clock signal for the communications portion of the device, using a crystal oscillator or other part. The oscillator output may be delivered to a phase locked loop to drive a high-frequency clock for the cellular or other communications portion of the hybrid device. A processor may determine frequency error between the phase locked loop and base station or other reference, to derive a digital frequency tracking message. A Doppler search or other logical control message may likewise be communicated from the processor to a GPS or other positioning receiver. The GPS receiver circuitry may consequently adjust Doppler center, window width or other parameters to enhance time to first fix or other performance. The architecture eliminates the need for a second crystal or other direct oscillator in the GPS receiver portion of the hybrid device, while still maintaining GPS performance. The architecture of the design also eliminates the need for frequency correcting elements in the crystal oscillator or other base reference oscillator or clock. The invention can furthermore be used in any system, radio, modem, transceiver, or receiver that has two or more receivers that share one reference or base oscillator or clock.

In an antenna beam control system, in which four antenna elements are connected to respective first signal processing circuits to which phase shift circuits are connected respectively, output signals from the phase shift circuits are combined by a combiner, a combined signal is processed by a second signal processing circuit, and phase shift amounts in said phase shift circuits are controlled in accordance with strength information of the signal processed in the second signal processing circuit such that a strength of the signal becomes optimum, characterized in that five combinations of binary signals by means of which five antenna beam patterns including four antenna beam patterns each of which is obtained by setting a phase shift amount of respective one of at least four phase shift circuits corresponding to said at least four antenna elements to 180null and setting phase shift amounts of the remaining phase shift circuits to 0null and one antenna beam pattern which is obtained by setting phase shift amounts of all the phase shift circuits corresponding to said at least four antenna elements to 0null are stored, and phase shift amounts of said phase shift circuits are controlled by reading the five combinations of binary signals to find an optimum antenna beam pattern. The antenna beam control system becomes simple in construction, cheap in cost, and is easily realized by an IC chip.

An advanced external beam steering controller (AEBSC) for use with a phased array antenna which requires only spherical coordinate pointing information to be supplied from a remote controller. The AEBSC uses the spherical coordinate pointing information, as well as stored information for the X, Y and Z axes locations of each specific antenna element of the phased array antenna, to generate actual phase shift values needed to be applied to each antenna element in order to point the antenna in accordance with a predetermined pointing angle. The invention significantly reduces the amount of electrical cabling required for communicating with the external controller, and also reduces the required data rate at which information must be supplied from the remote controller to the AEBSC.
