The present invention has for its object to provide a piezoelectric oscillator that has improved secular variation characteristics and excels in suppressing undesired resonance. The piezoelectric oscillator has a piezoelectric vibrator and an oscillation transistor, and since a collector load resistance, a capacitance, a parallel circuit of a resistance and a capacitance, and said piezoelectric vibrator are connected between the collector of the transistor and an AC-wise grounded power supply, between the emitter and collector of the transistor, between the emitter of the transistor and the ground, and between the base of the transistor and the ground, respectively, it is possible to sharply reduce a current flow through the crystal vibrator, permitting suppression of frequency variations by the secular change characteristics of the oscillator; furthermore, the reduction of the current flow through the piezoelectric vibrator improves C/N and prevents undesired vibration and oscillation as well as decreases secular changes.

To provide a piezoelectric oscillator in which, even after a first package and a second package are bonded to each other, the connection state can be easily observed externally, so that testability can be enhanced, and connection failure can be easily found out to perform a repair. A piezoelectric oscillator includes a first package housing a piezoelectric resonator element therein and having external terminal portions connected to excitation electrodes of the piezoelectric resonator element, and a second package housing an oscillating circuit element, the first package being superposed on and fixed to the second package. Herein, in the second package, the oscillating circuit element, which is connected to a lead frame, is molded out of resin, and connection terminal portions and mounting terminals formed of the lead frame are exposed at the second package. Furthermore, the external terminal portions of the first package are exposed at the side surfaces of the first package, and the external terminal portions and the connection terminal portions of the second package are electrically connected to each other by a conductive material.

A charge pump includes a charge circuit switch, a pump circuit switch, and a controller for generating a first control signal for switching the charge circuit switch and a second control signal for switching the pump circuit. In order to reduce the effects of self-jitter and improve signal quality, the controller generates the first and second control signals so that they have a same amplitude and slew rate. This results in improving steady-state phase error (DC skew). To further improve performance, current sources of the charge pump are controlled to operate continuously. This advantageously minimizes parastic switching currents. The charge pump may be incorporated within a phase-locked loop for purposes of generating frequency signals. The phase-locked loop may be self-biased. A processing system having, for example, a microprocessor-based computing architecture may advantageously include the phase-locked loop for performing any one of a variety of applications.

A phase-locked loop circuit includes one loop for regulating phase of a VCO with respect to a reference source. In another loop, VCO frequency is compared to frequency of a crystal oscillator. Digital counters divide the frequency of the crystal oscillator and VCO to a common reference frequency. Once the frequency loop is locked, the counter at the output of the crystal oscillator is bypassed. The counter is bypassed by a flip-flop circuit clocked by the crystal oscillator and receiving a scaled input from the VCO. While the VCO frequency error is in the frequency range of correction capability of the phase-locked loop, the output of the flip-flop will duplicate the output of the counter. Thus, the counter can be bypassed and shut off.
