The invention relates to a base body for a drilling tool, in particular to drilling/grinding tool whose front surface (14) can accommodate a cutting insert holder (2). Said invention also relates to a cutting insert holder used with said base body (1) provided with a seat for receiving a cutting insert (13, 13′, 13″). The aim of the invention is to develop a flexibly usable drilling tool whose cutting insert holder can be adjusted in a simple and accurate manner and is not expensive. For this purpose, at least one adjusting pin (4) which is connected to the base body (1) axially overlaps the cutting insert holder (2) and/or the cutting insert in such a way that a radial adjustment of the cutting insert holder (2) with respect to the base body (1) can be carried out by measuring the radial deviation (a) between the defined point of the cutting insert holder (2) or a cutting insert (3, 3′, 3″) accommodated thereby and the adjusting pin (4). In addition, a bearing surface (19) for supporting the cutting insert holder (2) on the front surface (14) of the base body (1) of the drilling tool is provided with a projection (17), preferably longitudinal, which extends outside the bearing surface (19) and is embeddable into a groove (15) on the front surface (14).

A boring tool assembly is provided and has a cutting tool mounted on one end thereof and permits the boring of a straight hole through a member. The boring tool assembly includes a boring bar having integral guide members disposed thereon that follows behind the cutting tool and maintains contact with the machined surface just cut in order to keep the cutting tool in proper alignment. To permit the continued use of the boring bar after the outer diameter of the cutting tool has been reduced due to wear, each of the integral guide members are resiliently mounted on the boring bar. This permits the guide members to collapses inwardly to maintain a perfect fit with the pilot pore. This collapse inwardly of the guide members is important to maintain bearing contact of the guide members with the pilot bore if the hole being cut by the cutting tool reduces in size due to wear or if the cutting tool has been re-sharpened or replaced with a different cutting tool. A resilient member is bonded in respective slots between the bottom of the associated slot and the guide member to provide the resilient mounting of the hardened guide members to the boring bar.

The cutter holders are restrained against rotational movement within the bore but not axial movement, whereby rotation of a first drive member having threaded engagement with an internally threaded longitudinal bore in the cutter holder will cause radial adjustment of the cutter holder relative to the boring head. Rotation of the first device member is accomplished by rotation of a second drive member having a gear drive connection with the first drive member. A first micrometer dial on the outer end of the first drive member provides for rough orientation of the cutter holder during such radial adjustment thereof, whereas a second micrometer dial on the outer end of the second drive member provides for extremely precise measurements of such radial adjustment.

A rotary material removing tool wherein an elongated rod supports a carrier for two elongated knife holders between two legs which flank the carrier and can be biased toward each other and against the carrier by a clamping screw extending transversely of the guide groove and at right angles to the axis of the rod. Those surfaces of the holders which abut against each other have elongated shallow recesses which surround the respective ends of the corresponding slots and receive a plate-like intercepting member having a centrally located hole for the shank of the clamping screw. The recesses extend to the inner ends of the respective holders and toward the knives which are mounted at the outer ends of such holders. The legs of the support close the outer ends of the slots, and the intercepting member serves to prevent penetration of chips, shavings and/or other foreign matter into those ends of the slots which are provided in the abutting surfaces of the holders. The extent to which the recesses extend beyond the slots and toward the respective knives equals or exceeds the length of a slot minus the width of such slot, and the length of the intercepting member at least equals the combined length of two slots minus the width of a slot. This ensures that the intercepting member invariably closes such portions of the respective ends of the two slots which are not overlapped by the holders.

A plurality of boring cutters and honing stones are coaxially arranged on a machining head. A bar member is reciprocatingly inserted and splined within a rotary hollow spindle. Both the end opening surface of the spindle and the end of the bar member are taper-engaged with each other so that the bar member may be disengaged and moved forwardly with respect to the spindle. The machining head is coupled with the end surface of the bar member. When the spindle is taper-engaged with the bar member, a workpiece is bored. When the bar member is moved forwardly to release the taper engagement, the workpiece is honed by reciprocating the bar member and the machining head. Thus, the honing operation can be performed with a rigid structure, and both boring and honing operations can be effected by the same machining head.
