Spark-erosion machining method and machine implementing a machining gap, a process regulator, a numerical control system, a Nominal Trajectory. The latter describes the movement of the tool electrode relative to the part as it ought to proceed if no disturbance were to occur during the machining. Information contained in the Nominal Trajectory is used to define at least two control vectors Vg, Vp which orient, within the coordinate system XYZ, two independent regulation movements. The first, or Gap Vector Vg, defines the direction in which a first regulation movement of the axes of the machine must be performed to maintain the removal of material. The second, or Position Vector Vp, defines the direction in which a second regulation movement of the axes of the machining machine must be performed to correct a tool electrode position error. The respective amplitudes of the regulation movements are calculated in real time by the process regulator.

This double voltage source (UD) comprises a first (U1) and a second (U2) voltage source connected galvanically to each other by their poles. Switching elements (SW1, SW2) permit producing by selective connection of the branches at least two increasing current slopes and at least two decreasing current slopes.

A machining head carries at its end a sensor comprising a pressure-sensitive element (4) mounted on the parts (1, 2) holding the injector jet for the machining fluid, as well as the buffering pieces (5, 6, 12) forming a shield. The element (4) is an insulating and watertight tube, arranged to form a ring in the space left between the coaxial, truncated conical surfaces of the parts (1) and (2). It contains conducting parts which come into contact with one another when it is deformed by the action of a pressure whose value exceeds a given threshold. This results in the closing of an electrical circuit which transmits an appropriate signal to the controls of the EDM machine in order to interrupt the relative movement of the head. The device enables any shock or abnormal stress acting on the end of the machining head to be detected. By means of an O-ring seal (7) acting as a hinge, the part (1) and the piece (12) are returned to their original positions when the stress disappears. Also, the seal (7) permits an overrun to occur.

To prevent the forces due to friction and pressure arising between the plate 1 and the wall 2 and between the seal 4 and the arm 5 and acting asymmetrically on the arm through the wall being transmitted to the arm 5 and causing its deflection, a sheath 6 is mounted between the seal 4 and the arm 5 and encloses this arm without coming into contact with it.

A device for machining by electroerosion has a tool electrode driven in a rotary motion controlled by a servomotor and showing the shape of a solid of revolution around its axis of rotation. A measuring circuit continuously evaluates the degree of contamination of the machining dielectric liquid in relation to a reference value. The measurement is made by a transducer for the instantaneous voltage U.sub.i of each spark and by comparing it to a predetermined value U.sub.b, thus determining the proportion of so-called low-level sparks for which U.sub.i .ltoreq.U.sub.b, a signal being delivered when this proportion surpasses a predetermined threshold, or by a current transductor working during the waiting time preceding the striking of each spark, a signal being delivered when a predetermined current threshold is attained. A servo circuit modulates the rotation speed of the tool electrode as a function of this signal. The detector makes it possible to detect and remedy the appearance of ejected sparks.

A method and apparatus for holding an electrically conductive workpiece in a machine tool by forming at least one positioning cavity or recess on a face of the workpiece by a holder having a tip used for machining the cavity or recess by a conventional EDM sinking operation. Subsequently to forming the cavity, the tip is used as one of the holding members for the workpiece. Two tips may be used to sink cavities or recesses on opposite surfaces of the workpiece, or the tips may take the form of fingers sunk into the workpiece from one side only. The tips form part of support members mounted on the end of displaceable arms for enabling the workpiece to be positioned relative to a tool or to be displaced. The tip-provided supports may be used for supporting a portion of the workpiece being cut off or severed from the workpiece.

In a travelling wire EDM apparatus, the location of an electric discharge along the portion of the electrode wire in the machining zone between the electrode wire and the workpiece, in the course of a cut being effected on the electrode workpiece by electrical discharges, is measured by measuring the currents flowing through each of the two lines connecting one output of the pulse generator associated with the EDM apparatus to the electrode wire on one side and the other of the machining zone. The measured currents are added and subtracted and the position, or location, of an electrical discharge is determined by a signal proportional to the quotient of the difference by the sum of the currents.
