Abstract: Methods of Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) ceramic components are provided. In one aspect, a method includes electrical discharge machining a ceramic component, such as a Ceramic Matrix Composite (CMC) component. The ceramic component is electrical discharge machined while a contact matrix is positioned so that electrically conductive compliant and pressurized contacts of the contact matrix engage the ceramic component and so that an electrically conductive member of the contact matrix is in electrical conduction to a grounding structure.

Abstract: EDM assemblies mount on a machining surface and discharge rotating sub-electrodes against the surface. The sub-electrodes can also revolve about another shared axis while discharging. Rotation and revolution may be achieved with planetary gears fixed with the sub-electrodes and meshing with a stationary sun gear. Several sub-electrodes can be used in a single assembly. Downward movement of the sub-electrodes from a central shaft on the mount allows several inches of the surface to be machined. Assemblies are usable in a nuclear reactor during a maintenance period to machine a hole for a replacement manway cover underwater in the flooded reactor. The differing rotational movements and vertical movement can be independently controlled with separate motors in the assembly. Power and controls may be provided remotely through an underwater connection.

Abstract: A method, consisting of providing a metal wire having a wire diameter and an end, and positioning a conductor at a distance from the end of the wire. The method further includes creating an electrical discharge between the conductor and the end, while setting the distance and an electrical potential of the discharge, so as to create a bead of a predefined size on the end. The method also includes assembling the wire with the created bead into an invasive probe, so that the bead is positioned at an outer surface of the probe.

Abstract: An electrode guide assembly for an EDM process includes a guide tube having a first end and a second end, a fluid feed portion, a fluid return portion, and an electrode. The guide tube has a set of at least two supporting protrusions, with the protrusions projecting radially inwardly from an inner diametral surface of the guide tube. The electrode is slidably accommodated within the guide tube, with an outer diametral surface of the electrode abutting against the set of supporting protrusions. The first end of the guide tube is in fluid communication with the second end of the guide tube to thereby provide a fluid feed channel, and the second end of the guide tube is in fluid communication with the first end of the guide tube to thereby provide a fluid return channel.

Abstract: A gas path component for a gas turbine engine includes a film cooling hole disposed in the gas path component. The film cooling hole includes a metering section, a diffuser, and a tapered surface extending between the metering section and the diffuser. The tapered surface is oriented between twenty degrees and seventy degrees with respect to a centerline axis of the metering section. The tapered surface is oriented at an obtuse angle with respect to an immediately adjacent surface of the diffuser, the obtuse angle is open towards the centerline axis. The tapered surface is configured to mitigate flow separation in the diffuser.

Abstract: A power supply device for an electric discharge machine includes a DC power supply which is connected in parallel to an electrode gap, a plurality of switching elements which are in parallel to each other and which are arranged between the electrode gap and the DC power supply, a current value acquisition unit for acquiring a value of a current, and an ON-OFF control unit which, during the time when the current value reaches a predetermined value until the time when the current starts to fall, sets a cycle for switching the plurality of switching elements from off to on to the same cycle, switches the plurality of switching elements from off to on in a predetermined order for each timing of a phase of 90°, which is 360° divided by the number of the plurality of switching elements, sets an ON-period of each of the plurality of switching elements based on a difference between the value of the current and the predetermined value, and performs ON-OFF control of the plurality of switching elements based on the cycle, the timing, and the ON-period.

Abstract: A compact lower guide unit that allows the electrode guide to be attached and detached more easily and reliably. Provided is a lower guide unit including a housing, an electrode guide, and a pull-up mechanism having a guide support, links, and a power cylinder. The guide support includes a biasing member and a displacement member. The biasing member can bias the displacement member, and the displacement member can be displaced between a restriction position and a release position. The links can be rotated by a force applied by the power cylinder. The electrode guide is fixed to the guide support by a biasing force of the biasing member when the displacement member is in the restriction position, and the electrode guide is released from the lower guide unit when the displacement member is displaced to the release position.

Abstract: A deburring subassembly has a controller to generate an electrical current and move a deburring tool bit from a non-deburring position to a range of deburring positions. The electrical current permits deburring of the workpiece without damaging it. A workpiece securement subassembly secures the workpiece for formation on a computer numerical controlled (CNC) machine tool and also holds the workpiece in place for deburring. The electrical current is provided to a deburring tool bit. The controller thereby controls movement of the deburring tool bit to the range of deburring positions and generates the electrical current to deburr the workpiece.
