Abstract:
A method for remotely detecting at a ground station failed multiplexors and radio transceivers in an airborne telephone system is disclosed. Usage activity of the devices is predicted using a normalized gaussian distribution. A three prong test examines actual usage activity of the multiplexors and radio transceivers which is normalized and compared with that predicted utilizing a chi-square analysis with a specified confidence interval to detect abnormalities in the usage activity.
Abstract:
A reconfigurable ring architecture for RF transport over fibers which eliminates the need for multiple pairs of fibers to serve multiple microcells and the need for backup communications lines as a result of system failure due to a fiber break. The ring architecture has a plurality of remote units which are interconnected to a host unit in a serial fashion. The host unit transmits signals to the plurality of remote units and receives signals from the plurality of remote units. Each of the remote units having photodetectors for receiving the transmitted signals and an antenna/transmitter for receiving other signals from another source; a splitter for splitting the transmitted signals into two parts, one part of the signals being output from the remote unit and the other part of the signals being transferred to adjacent remote units and then back to the host unit; and a transmitter for transferring the other signals from the remote unit to adjacent remote units and then back to the host unit. The transmission and reception of signals taking place even in the event of failure of a remote unit or the interconnection between remote units.
Abstract:
Management packets are defined that are modified in the payload by each node along a virtual connection and are used to measure both end-to-end QoS and specific individual intermediate node performance parameters. Management packets are implemented by defining entirely new packets or by modifying ATM OAM cells. Switches or routers for use as intermediate nodes are defined that modify the payload of the management packet and locally measure packet delay and packet loss. An intermediate node measures and records the difference between the arrival and departure times of management packets at that switch utilizing delay-stamp fields within the management packets and either the switch internal routing header or timestamp fields within the packet. At the endpoint of the virtual connection, delay-stamp fields in the management packet indicate individual node delays and the cumulative delay. An intermediate node counts the number of packets it discards and records these values in the payload of the management packet individually and cumulatively.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for telecommunications network local number portability supports service provider portability, location portability, and service portability. A subscriber is assigned a nongeographic subscriber number that is uniquely mapped to a location-based geographic terminal location number. Different embodiments of the apparatus query different combinations of databases to obtain the nongeographic subscriber number to geographic terminal location number mapping that allows a call to a nongeographic subscriber number to be routed and delivered using existing network routing mechanisms. The originating switch determines whether a received called number is a geographic terminal location number or a nongeographic subscriber number that will require the originating switch to query a database to request that the number be mapped to a geographic terminal location number. The queried database can contain the information for mapping a nongeographic subscriber number to a geographic terminal location number, either for all valid nongeographic subscriber numbers or for only the nongeographic subscriber numbers of a specific service provider, can contain information for mapping all valid nongeographic subscriber numbers to service provider identification codes containing either network routing information or the address of another database, or a combination of both. If the queried database is able to map the called number to a geographic terminal location number, it returns that number to the originating switch for call routing. If the database is unable to map the nongeographic subscriber number to a geographic terminal location number, it can either query a second database for a service provider identification code or itself return a service provider identification code to the originating switch. The first database then uses the received service provider identification code to identify another database to query for the geographic terminal location number, forwards the code to the originating switch which then makes the query, or uses the network routing information to route the call for further handling using existing network routing mechanisms.
Abstract:
Apparatus and method for measuring the radio signal (RF) transmission statistics of a communication channel. The apparatus is arranged to receive and process a wide bandwidth signal from which signal power is measured and from which fading or other such transmission problems can be measured for the wide bandwidth. In parallel with the wide bandwidth receiver there is a narrow bandwidth receiver arranged to receive the same RF signal but to process only a single tone or narrow bandwidth portion of the RF signal. From this narrow bandwidth processing the narrow bandwidth transmission statistical characteristics of the RF transmission channel can be measured simultaneously with the wide bandwidth statistical characteristics. The outputs of the spectrum analyzer are digitized and fed to a computer for storage and for other analysis.
Abstract:
Apparatus is disclosed which is advantageously used in local area, metropolitan-area, and wide-area networks using a dual bus architecture, and more particularly to a dual bus network design having significantly increased distance before termination or regeneration of the optical signal, and using wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) at one optical wavelength to transmit data over the bus and a second optical wavelength to transmit a clock signal and a CATV video signal.
Abstract:
A secure wireless party line system that can be used by a group of mobile users to communicate with each other like a wired party line but without the cumbersome inconvenience of long wired tether. The party line function is achieved by the use of a fixed wireless repeater. The fixed wireless repeater receives spread spectrum transmissions from all N mobile users at a frequency f1, and passes the received signals through an RF amplifier and upconverter, and then to an IF amplifier and power divider, which converts the received signals down to a convenient intermediate frequency (IF), and feeds N receive spread spectrum processors, each dedicated to receive a coded spread spectrum transmission from one user. The received voice outputs from the N users are then combined in a N-channel voice data multiplexer, and broadcast at a frequency f2 to all users with a common spread spectrum code word added by a transmit spread spectrum processor. The commonly coded broadcast messages are processed by an RF amplifier and broadcast at frequency f2. All mobile radio receivers receive on the same common code word used by the fixed wireless repeater for broadcasting. Each mobile user on said party line carries a simple single channel radio transceiver. Spread spectrum transmission provides security and anti-jamming performance. Analog and digital embodiments are disclosed.
Abstract:
A network interface module operably connected to a subscriber's television receiver and to a switched broadband digital network includes a fiber-compatible digital transceiver. A downlink receiver in the transceiver detects video/audio/data information that is time-multiplexed within a serially transmitted digital signal optically transmitted by the switched digital network as a broadband digital downlink channel. The detected information is decoded into a parallel format of video/data samples, audio samples, and recovered sample clock that are applied to a digital switch in the television receiver.
