An apparatus is disclosed for controlling fluid flow at a flow control location between first and second rollers. Each roller is rotatable about its longitudinal central axis. The two rollers are disposed adjacent to each other so as to form a flow control location or nip between the rollers. The nip has an entrance side and an exit side. As the rollers rotate, fluid from a fluid pan is carried on the outer surface of the first roller to the entrance side of the nip. Some of the fluid at the nip is transferred onto the outer surface of the second roller. As the rollers continue to rotate, the fluid flows out of the nip at the exit side of the nip. An excess fluid condition occurs at the nip when the amount of fluid flow to the entrance side of the nip exceeds the amount of fluid flow from the exit side of the nip. A brass collar is connected at one end of the first roller. Another brass collar is connected at the outer end of the first roller. The two brass collars rotate with the first roller and cooperate to prevent excess fluid at the entrance side of the nip from flowing around the opposite axial ends of the nip onto the second roller. This is accomplished by the two brass collars picking up excess fluid at the entrance side of the nip and subsequently transferring the excess fluid back to the fluid pan.

A delivery fan includes a plurality of blades defining a fan pocket for receiving a signature. The plurality of blades includes two sets of blades. The blades of one set are axially equally spaced apart and define one side of the pocket. The blades of the other set are axially equally spaced apart and define the other side of the pocket. The blades of both sets of blades have surfaces for engaging opposite sides of the signature and for deforming the signature into undulations extending in a direction transverse to the direction of movement of the signature. While the signature is being engaged and deformed, the frictional contact between the signature and the surfaces in the pocket slows down the signature. This minimizes buckling and/or bouncing of the signature in the pocket.

A rotatable drum is disclosed for securing thereto various sizes of sheets of film by a partial vacuum. The drum includes a cylindrical body and first and second circular end blocks connected for closing the body. The drum is mounted for rotation about its central axis. The first end block defines concentrically therethrough a central passageway, connected to a source of partial vacuum so that the drum may be partially evacuated. The cylindrical body defines on its outer surface a plurality of parallel, identical grooves extending circumferentially about the body. A plurality of holes also extend through the body, each of the holes opening on the outer surface into one of the grooves. Importantly, the cross-sectional area of each hole is approximately equal to the cross-sectional area of each of the grooves, and no porting or valving is provided for the drum interior to close unneeded holes. The first block further defines a plurality of auxiliary passageways, each of the auxiliary passageways opening at a first end through the inner face of the block and connecting at a second end with the central passageway. The auxiliary passageways are disposed within the first block symmetrically about the axis of the drum.

A method of automatic control of a printing press (10) comprising the steps of scanning a representation of an image to be printed by means of a light table (70) to derive therefrom objective data representing the average density of the inked image in areas corresponding to those controlled by keys (48) of an ink fountain, producing multiple printed copies (85) of the image as a result of subjective operator (80) intervention in the setting of the fountain keys, recording the objective data in memory (75) and subjective data representing the setting of the fountain keys as set by the operator in memory (90) for a plurality of different press runs, analyzing both the objective data and the key setting data by examining a plurality of harmonic components thereof sufficiently large to represent accurately that data by circuit means (100), correlating by a linear regression analysis respective harmonic components of the objective data and subjective data over said plurality of press runs and storing said linear regression parameters, thereafter scanning a representation of a new image to be printed by light table ( 70) to derive objective data therefrom, analyzing the new objective data by examining its harmonic components in circuit means (100) and by applying the regression parameter data for each previously found harmonic values, deriving therefrom key setting instructions for presetting the press (10).

An improved tyer includes a central station where loose stacks of signatures sre received. A pair of tying stations are disposed on opposite sides of the central station. A pair receiving stations are disposed adjacent to the tying stations. An improved shuttle assembly is used to sequentially move loose stacks of sheets from the central station to one or the other of the tying stations. The shuttle assembly includes three pusher arms which are movable along tracks between the central and tying stations. Gaps are provided in the tracks at the tying station to enable bands or straps to be moved through the tracks and secured around loose stacks of signatures at the tying stations. In order to provide for as compact a loose stack of signatures as possible at a tying station, the loose stack of signatures is compressed between a pair of pusher arms as it is moved to a tying station. In order to protect the bottom of a tied stack of signatures, a cover sheet is positioned between the bottom of the loose stack of signatures and a support surface as the loose stack of signatures is moved from the central station to a tying station.

A transfer mechanism for a magnetographic recording apparatus employs a pair of imaging/printing drums arranged for pivotal translation past one another so as to be controllably positionable at a respective one of imaging and printing stations. At the imaging station a latent image of the desired graphics/text to be reproduced is written onto a first drum while, at the same time, at the printing station, a latent image that was previously written at the imaging station onto a second drum is employed for hard copy reproduction. The transfer mechanism preferably comprises a set of rotatably driven and meshed gear wheels about the respective axes of which pivot of a pair of support arms upon which the imaging/printing drums are mounted. The support arms for a first of the drums are mounted for rotation with a first of the gear wheels about the axis of the first wheel, while the support arms for the second of the drums are mounted for rotation with a second of the gear wheels that mesh with the first wheel about the axis of the second of the gear wheels.

A quick-release mounting for a cutting wheel comprises a housing adjustably mounted in an arm, and a hollow shaft rotatably supported in the housing. The shaft has an expandable collet hub on which a wheel can be received. A mandrel extends within the shaft and has a tapered part to expand the collet hub; the mandrel is spring loaded toward expanding the hub, and a handle on the mandrel allows thrusting the mandrel in opposition to the spring load for release of a wheel. Locking members guard against accidental release of a wheel from the shaft, and an adjustable stop prevents over-tightening the collet hub. Adjustments of the mounting to mount or dismount a wheel and to change position thereof can all be accomplished without need for tools.

A method and apparatus are disclosed for transporting sheet materials from a source location to a stacking workstation. A lower conveyor is positioned between the source location and the stacking work station. An upper conveyor having a first conveyor section and a second conveyor section is positioned above the lower conveyor such that the first conveyor section is above an end portion of the lower conveyor and the second conveyor section extends beyond the the downstream end of the lower conveyor. The first conveyor section is pivotably fixed at an upstream end. The upstream end of the second conveyor section is pivotably attached adjacent the downstream end of the first conveyor section. The downstream end of the second conveyor section is adapted to be operatively coupled to the top of the stack of sheet materials being stacked on a movable support of the stacking workstation. When sheet materials enter between the lower conveyor and the first conveyor section, the first conveyor section pivots because of the profile of the sheet materials. The second conveyor section pivots with respect to the first conveyor section keeping the downstream end of the second conveyor section operatively coupled to the top of the stack of sheet materials being stacked. A sensor is provided to sense vertical position of the top of the stack of sheet materials being stack on the movable stacking support. The movement of the movable support of the stacking workstation is controlled responsive to the sensed vertical position of the top of the stack of sheet materials being stacked.

A collating apparatus having a collating unit, a perforating unit and a fan-folding unit, all gear driven by a single main drive gear, and having a gear assembly driven by the drive gear which includes a gear having an adjustable rotational eccentricity and an adjustable phase of eccentricity relative to the other gears. In a preferred embodiment, the adjustable gear includes an inner hub mounted on a rotatable shaft, an intermediate hub having an eccentric bore rotatably receiving the inner hub, a gear ring having an eccentric bore rotatably receiving the intermediate hub and a clamp bar attached to the gear ring and to the shaft. The bar includes an adjustment mechanism for varying the orientation of the gear ring, intermediate hub and inner hub relative to each other. By adjusting the rotational eccentricity of the gear ring and the phase of the eccentricity, the adjustable gear can compensate for eccentricities inherent in other gears of the apparatus so that the collating, perforating and folding units operate synchronously.
