A method and apparatus for manufacturing magnetic storage media is provided. A structural substrate is coated with a magnetically active material, and a magnetic pattern is formed in the magnetically active material by treating portions of the material with energy from a laser, e-beam, or focused ion beam. The beam may be divided into a packet of beamlets by passing the beam through a divider, which may be a diffraction grating for laser energy, a thin film single crystal for electrons, or a perforated plate for ions, or the beam may be generated by an array of emitters. The beamlets are then focused to a desired dimension and distribution by optics or electric fields. The resulting beam packet may be shaped further by passing through an aperture of any desired shape. The resulting beam may be applied sequentially to exposure zones to treat an entire substrate or plurality of substrates.

The suction roller is independent of format and therefore can be universally used for transporting flat material blanks, particularly label blanks. The suction roller has controllable suction holes or suction zones that lie at the closest possible distance from one another on its mantle surface. To this end, the suction roller has a plurality of suction slits, which run parallel to the roller axis and open into the mantle surface, whereby at least adjacent suction slits can have suction air applied to them independent of one another, and whereby a slit cover provided with passage holes is disposed on the mantle surface, in such a manner that the passage holes align with the suction slits, at least in part.

Elongated finned backup rollers have multiple magnetized fins for rolling contact with a moving endless, flexible, thin-gauge, heat-conducting, magnetically soft ferromagnetic casting belt for guiding and stabilizing the belt against thermal distortion while it moves along the mold cavity being heated at its front surface by heat from molten metal while being cooled at its reverse surface by flowing liquid coolant. Each finned backup roller includes an elongated, non-magnetic shaft rotatable around its axis and having multiple annular fins of magnetically soft ferromagnetic material fitted onto the shaft spaced along the shaft. The fins have circular perimeter rims for rolling contact with the reverse surface of a belt. Intervening collar shaped reach-out permanent magnets are mounted on the shaft between successive fins. The fins and reach-out collar magnets alternate in sequence along the length of the roller. The reach-out collar magnets are magnetized in a direction parallel with the axis of the roller. Thus, fins become magnetized by the magnets with their perimeters having alternate North and South magnetic polarities in sequence along the roller. In addition to attraction of the belt by magnetic flux which passes through small localized rim-contact regions where fin rims are rolling on the belt surface, the belt also is attracted toward the fins by reach-out magnetic flux extending out in three-dimensional patterns toward the belt from the rim and also from tapered side surfaces of each fin.

Ultrafine particles of Fe--Co--P material with a Fe/Co atomic ratio of from 95/5 to 70/30 and a (Fe+Co)/P atomic ratio of from 85/15 to 60/40 show improved ferromagnetic properties. The average particle size is from 0.005 to 0.1 .mu.m. Such ultrafine particles are prepared through gas phase reaction by evaporating a source material. They are useful in both magnetic and thermomagnetic recording media ensuring high density recording.

A phthalimide compound and an aromatic dialiphatic acid are reacted in the presence of a metal catalyst at elevated temperatures to form a phenylenebis diphthalimidine compound. The phenylenebis diphthalimidine compound is then reacted with 3-benzylidine phthalimidine and a metal salt of an aliphatic acid at elevated temperatures under an inert gas to form the intensely magnetic polymer. The reactions may be carried out in the presence of a solvent.

The thermo-magnetic recording device includes: (a) a heat generating roller for heating a local portion of the magnetic layer, through contact of an outer surface of the roller with the local portion of the magnetic layer; and (b) a magnetic-field generating device for generating, at the local portion of the magnetic layer, a magnetic field which has the same N-S direction as that of the unidirectional magnetization, and thereby initializing the magnetic layer.
