    摘要: A passive, modulating flow control valve including a poppet having a precisely designed and constant unbalanced area. A spring rate is selected to achieve the desired poppet travel over the desired range of differential pressure. Preferably, the spring preload is selected such that the poppet will remain fully open until a specified minimum differential pressure is reached. The unbalanced area and spring force allow the poppet to reposition proportional to the differential pressure throughout the design range of differential pressure. An array of radial holes in the poppet are used to define the trim characteristics. As the poppet is pushed closed by the differential pressure, few radial holes remain uncovered, which increases the flow resistance. The single modulating poppet includes flow and trim characteristics that respond directly to differential pressure acting on it to achieve tight control of the mass flow rate.

The dynamic sealing mechanism includes a shaft located at least partially within the seal housing, the shaft having a sealing surface of generally cylindrical form, relatively movable with respect to the seal housing, and having at least one radial bearing positioned radially by the shaft and locating the radial position of the seal housing. At least three fluid pressure-generated forces act axially on the seal housing to produce a net fluid pressure-generated axial force that is negligible.

    摘要: A seal backup ring is provided with undulating surfaces which create circumferential convergence with a relatively rotatable surface. The backup ring is configured so that differential pressure acting across a rotary seal forces portions of the backup ring against the relatively rotatable surface, closing, or substantially closing, the extrusion gap that the rotary seal is exposed to. In response to relative rotation between the backup ring and the mating relatively rotatable surface, the circumferential convergence promotes hydrodynamic lubrication within the dynamic interface that exists between the backup ring and the relatively rotatable surface. The modulus of elasticity of the backup ring is greater than the modulus of elasticity of the rotary seal.

This allows for an initially small extrusion gap to be present throughout the differential pressure range.

    摘要: A preferred embodiment of a sealing assembly for partitioning a first fluid from a second fluid includes a first machine component defining a seal groove adjoined to a pocket recess and a second machine component having a relatively rotatable surface. A rotary seal is in sealing engagement with the first and second machine components. The rotary seal includes a seal body of generally ring-like construction. The seal body has a predetermined modulus of elasticity and defines a dynamic sealing lip having a dynamic sealing surface. The seal body has an annular recess defining a plurality of retaining ridges and retaining depressions. The annular recess has a first volume in an uninstalled condition and a compressed volume when the rotary seal is in sealing engagement with the first and second machine components. An energizer element is positioned in the annular recess and engages the plurality of retaining ridges and depressions in the annular recess. The energizer element has a modulus of elasticity that is different than the predetermined modulus of elasticity of the seal body. The energizer element has a volume in the compressed condition that is no greater than the compressed volume of the annular recess. An anti-rotation projection engages the seal body and extends from the seal body into the pocket recess of the first machine component.

    摘要: A hydrodynamically lubricating rotary seal for partitioning a lubricant from an environment has a generally circular seal body, a sloping dynamic sealing lip, and an energizer. The dynamic sealing lip is provided for establishing compressed sealing relation with a relatively rotatable surface, and has a sloping dynamic sealing surface that varies in width, and also has a hydrodynamic inlet curvature that varies in position around the circumference of the seal. When the seal is installed against a relatively rotatable surface, the dynamic sealing lip deforms to define a variable width interfacial contact footprint against the relatively rotatable surface that is wavy on the lubricant side, and wedges a film of lubricating fluid into the interface in response to relative rotation. The environment edge of the interfacial contact footprint is substantially circular, and therefore does not produce a hydrodynamic wedging action in response to relative rotation.
