Abstract:
Apparatus for spin-welding comprises a spin welding machine having a spin welding head, a ram assembly, and a feed mechanism; the ram assembly is driven from a shaft and the feed mechanism comprises a rotating turret mounted on a shaft which is driven from the shaft via a Geneva mechanism. The spin welding head is driven by a low inertia DC servo motor operated by a programmable logic controller and timed from a switch unit driven off the shaft.

A food container comprising an open-ended cylindrical body which is made of a crystallizable polyethylene terephthalate material, and end closures at each end of the body forming with the body a closed container, the body material being biaxially oriented and the container body having been head-set, while restrained against radial or axial shrinkage, at a temperature between about 180.degree. C. and about 240.degree. C., whereby the container is able to withstand hot-filling, pasteurization or sterilization temperatures of up to about 120.degree. C. without undergoing shrinkage of its linear dimensions by more than 3%.
Abstract:
In the erection of rectangular tray-type cartons from blanks of foldable sheet material, corner tabs which are to be uppermost in the erected carton are first folded up from the plane of the blank, which is then passed through a die by a punch to form the side wall. On completion of the stroke of the punch, the pair of opposed elongate panels which carry the uppermost tabs are folded outwardly by folding bars carried by the punch. The partially erected carton is then transferred to a continuously moving conveyor and the other pair of elongate panels are folded outwardly by oscillating fingers and plough bars. The upstanding tabs are then heated by travelling hot air jets and pressed down by pressure rollers to seal them to the other tabs and complete the horizontal peripheral flange which extends continuously around the carton.

A tubular article with a closed end is formed from a thermoformable polymer material, e.g. a high molecular weight saturated linear polyester such as polyethylene terephthalate, by forcing a punch (21) through the plane of a pre-heated and clamped sheet (13) of the polymer, centrally within an annular die (10) so as to draw the sheet into tubular form without exerting compressive stresses on the sheet between the punch and die, the punch being maintained at a temperature below the glass transition temperature of the polymer, e.g. by passing cooling fluid through internal passages (16), and being moved at a speed of at least 1/2 meter per second to effect the drawing. The punch head (21) may be convex or concave to produce a shaped closed end on the article, e.g. for making a pressure-resistant container, and the punch may co-operate with a shaped movable anvil (201) at the end or at an intermediate point in its stroke. Replaceable annular spacers (24) can be used to adjust the point in the punch stroke at which it co-operates with the anvil.
Abstract:
A bottle for carbonated beverage is moulded from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) thermoplastics resin and has a recessed base (14) formed by a standing ring (15) and an outwardly domed central panel (21). A ring member attached to the base by spin-welding receives the crest (19) of the standing ring and extends along the inner wall of the standing ring to the central panel so as to control distortion of the base when the bottle is pressurized. The ring member is made of PET so that the bottle is readily recyclable.
