摘要: A therapy system for applying an electrical signal to an internal anatomical feature of a patient includes an implantable component and an external component. The external component can be configured into one of multiple selectable operating modes. The therapy system also may include a first external antenna configured to communicate with the implantable component and a second external antenna configured to communicate with the implantable component. Plugging one of the external antennas into the external component automatically configures the external component into one of the operating modes.

摘要: Methods and systems for monitoring the condition of a septum in an implantable medical device are disclosed. Monitoring of the septum provides the ability to determine whether a needle has pierced the septum to effect the transfer of fluids into or out of a reservoir in the implantable medical device. Septum monitoring may provide the ability to determine whether the septum is maintaining its ability to seal the reservoir against leakage. The systems of the present invention include an ultrasonic transducer acoustically coupled to the septum to emit ultrasonic energy directly into the septum. Insertion of a needle through the septum can be detected by the acoustical changes caused by the needle located within the septum.

摘要: The invention relates to a system for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Such systems face an additional contribution to the inhomogeneity of the radio frequency (RF) field when high magnetic fields are applied. The invention tries to improve the homogeneity of the RF field for high field strengths, particularly for field strengths at or above 3 tesla. To improve the homogeneity an electrically conducting material (4) is positioned within the cavity (2) of the system. The material has a conductivity and a thickness which ensure that the total radial conductance in an xy-plane perpendicular to the symmetry axis of the cavity becomes isotropic.

摘要: An apparatus for applying a signal to a nerve for the treatment of a disorder includes a first electrode and a second electrode. Each of the electrodes is adapted to be secured to a nerve of a patient. A signal generator is electrically connected to each of the first and second electrodes. The signal generator is adapted to create a signal having a first waveform at the first electrode and a second waveform at the second electrode. The waveforms have parameters selected to block propagation of neural action potentials. The waveforms have a repeating pattern of cycles of pulses with a delay period between at least selected ones of said pulses. In one embodiment, the first and second waveforms are out of phase for a cycle of one of the waveforms to occur during a delay period of the other of the waveforms.
