A track seek method for a disk drive system. In the seek method of the present invention, the head is moved according to the characteristics of an ideal, electronically generated signal which is independent from data read off the disk. By varying the characteristics of the ideal signal, the seek profile is controlled. The ideal signal is sampled at times specified by an error signal which is based upon data read off the disk. The movement of the head is adjusted according to the sampled signal. Since track crossings correspond to ideal signal cycles, the number of tracks crossed is determined by counting the number of cycles of the ideal signal. Consequently, the position of the head is known at all times throughout the seek, thereby maintaining the seek in a closed-loop configuration during the entire seek. When the appropriate number of tracks have been counted, the head is stopped on the destination track and the head can access data contained therein. Furthermore, the seek operation's dynamic range may be increased by extending the range of each cycle of the ideal signal to cover more than one track.

Magneto-optical storage media designed for optical storage systems such as disk drives with optical flying heads. Dielectric layers are designed and implemented to maximize optical coupling between the flying optical head and the media and to reduce variations of signals with flight height of the flying optical head.

A semi permanent enclosure for an optical data storage device has a first film dimensioned to overlie the read surface of the optical data storage device and a second film dimensioned to overlie the non-read surface of the optical data storage device. The enclosure includes a rim arrangement having an L-shaped cross-section extending around the periphery of the optical data storage device. The first film may have an optical couplant on the surface thereof destined for attachment to the optical data storage device. The optical couplant preferably has a refractive index compatible with that of the optical data storage device to minimize losses and distortion of signals. The optical couplant may also be used with the second film.

Optical storage systems based on air-bearing-suspended optical heads in a near-field configuration. Such a system comprises an optical head for reading and writing data and a head positioning system, an optics module including beam relay optics and signal detectors, and a medium holding and loading module to hold an optical medium. An electronic control system is also provided to control the system operation. The optical head includes a near-field lens with a high index of refraction and in a near-field configuration in which the near-field lens has a numerical aperture greater than unity when the spacing between an exit facet of the optical head and a recording layer in the optical medium is a fraction of one wavelength of optical beam.

A semi-permanent enclosure for an optical data storage device 60 comprises a first film 50 dimensioned to overlie the read surface of device 60 and a second film 30 dimensioned to overlie the non-read surface. The enclosure includes rim means 20, 40 having an L-shaped cross-section extending around the periphery of device 60. Film 50 may have optical couplant on the surface thereof destined for attachment to device 60 in use. The optical couplant preferably has a refractive index compatible with that of device 60 to minimise losses and distortion of signals. Optical couplant may also be used with second film 30. The optical couplant may be a material capable of flowing into minor defects on the surface of device 60. This allows minor blemishes to repaired so that stored data is not compromised. Alternatively, the optical couplant may be a solid malleable material interposed between device 60 and the film(s) or may comprise the film itself.
