Dielectric layers are designed and implemented to maximize optical coupling between the flying optical head and the media and to reduce variations of signals with flight height of the flying optical head.

A mechanism for supporting and permitting selected adjustment of the position of a headrest relative to the back of a chair comprises a body, a first pivotable connection, a second pivotable connection and a selectively releasable locking mechanism. The first pivotable connection is near the first end of the body, adapted to connect to the chair and to allow pivoting of the body relative to the chair. The second pivotable connection is near the second end of the body, adapted to connect to the headrest and to allow pivoting of the headrest relative to the body. The selectively releasable locking mechanism is configured to retain the body in selected angular positions relative to the chair and relative to the headrest by clamping together interleaved plate members in frictional contact and to allow for one-handed actuation.

Optical storage systems based on air-bearing-suspended optical heads in a near-field configuration. Such a system comprises an optical head for reading and writing data and a head positioning system, an optics module including beam relay optics and signal detectors, and a medium holding and loading module to hold an optical medium. An electronic control system is also provided to control the system operation. The optical head includes a near-field lens with a high index of refraction and in a near-field configuration in which the near-field lens has a numerical aperture greater than unity when the spacing between an exit facet of the optical head and a recording layer in the optical medium is a fraction of one wavelength of optical beam.
Abstract:
An improved interface is provided for transmitting data messages between a telephone switching system and an adjunct processor. The interface hardware includes multiple connectors for connecting the interface to the telephone switching system and a single connector for connecting the interface to an adjunct processor. The interface software provides multiple transmission links for processing and transmitting the data messages between the telephone switching system and the adjunct processor. The multiple links provided by the interface of the present invention result in a system with improved performance and reliability.

Method and apparatus for dampening resonant vibrations of a disk drive. The apparatus includes a disk cartridge including a top shell and a bottom shell forming an enclosure. A disk is contained within the enclosure where the inner surfaces of the top and bottom shells and the top, bottom and edge surfaces of the disk form a gap sufficiently tight to provide aero damping.

A disk cartridge assembly includes an enclosure, a recording disk mounted for rotation in the enclosure, and an electrostatic cleaning element positioned on an interior surface of the enclosure. The cleaning element engages one side of the disk at least when the disk is at rest and when the disk is rotated at a low speed, and the cleaning element is charged to a high voltage.

A lift system removes a display unit or components thereof from a tiled display wall in a way that minimizes the risk of damaging the removed display unit and other display units in the tiled display wall. A lifting structure is configured to selectively lift one or more display units away from the desired display unit when the lifting structure is raised by a vertical motion actuator. The lifting structure is further configured to be free to rotate slightly about a vertical axis when lifting the display units, so that the lifted display units are not constrained to purely vertical translation when lifted away from the desired display unit.

An interface for use in a telephone communication system provides for connection of a telephone switch to an IP network, allowing data signals between the telephone switch and a VMS to be transmitted by the IP network. In addition to transmission of the signals over an IP network, the interface can be configured to provide additional functionality including translation of the message protocol; connection of the interface to a network operations center; verification of message accuracy and completeness; acknowledgment of the receipt of a message; activation/deactivation of a message waiting indicator; connection to an SS7 network; back-up transmission between the IP network and the switch; and proxy/redirect of voice signals.
