A system and method for identifying the accessibility of a base station in a communication system. The system includes at least one Closed Subscriber Group (CSG)-Open (hybrid) base station. The base station can apply a base station identifier, such as a CSG identifier, as a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) mask to a first broadcast channel communication and can include the base station identifier in the payload of, or as a CRC mask applied to, a second broadcast channel communication. A mobile station can determine from the base station identifier in the first broadcast communication if the mobile station is a member authorized closed access to the base station. The mobile station can determine from the base station identifier in second first broadcast communication if the mobile station is a non-member authorized open access to the base station.

A subscriber station can efficiently determine an accessible base station by scanning a subset of base stations based on an optimized list received from a serving base station. The subscriber station includes a white list that contains information regarding a number of closed subscriber group (CSG) base stations to which the subscriber station is subscribed. The subscriber station can transmit a request message that includes one or more of: indication of whether the detected identifier of the femto base station is in the whitelist or not; and its location information. In response, the base station can send a message that includes the nearby femtocells and whether the femtocell is accessible or inaccessible to the subscriber station. The femto base station can be designed to be in transmission off mode when none of its subscribers is in its coverage. The serving base station can select a set of the accessible femtocells to the subscriber station, and request the selected femtocells to monitor an uplink signaling of the subscriber station so that the femtocell can be awaken when the femtocell is in transmission off mode or be aware that the subscriber station is in proximity, if the uplink signaling is detected.

Methods for maintaining continuing existence of a next-in-line protecting device in a beacon network including a primary protecting device (PPD), the next-in-line protecting device (NPD) and a plurality of secondary protecting devices (SPDs). In one method, a subset of the plurality of secondary protecting devices periodically transmit beacon messages to the primary protecting device. When the next-in-line protecting device disappears, the primary protecting device selects a secondary protecting device from among the secondary protecting devices that have transmitted the beacon messages within a certain period to be a new next-in-line protecting device. In another method, the plurality of secondary protecting devices continuously monitor an existence of the next-in-line protecting device. When the next-in-line protecting device disappears for a certain period of time, a subset of the plurality of secondary protecting devices may contend to be a new next-in-line protecting device. In still another method, the primary protecting device transmits a beacon message to the plurality of secondary protecting devices to indicate whether a next-in-line protecting device is required. When a next-in-line protecting device is required, a subset of the secondary protecting devices contend to be a new next-in-line protecting device.

Prior to a change in a configuration, such as a change to the carrier frequency, bandwidth, base station type, and so forth of the base station, the base station can inform a subscriber station to prepare for the reconfiguration by sending a message to the subscriber station. The message informs the subscriber station regarding the change in configuration and a timing regarding the change. The base station can command the subscriber station to handover to the serving base station with the new configuration or the subscriber station can choose to handover to the serving base station with the new configuration. The subscriber station can perform network reentry to the serving base station with the new configuration at the time of or after the new configuration is effective. A communication context between the stations can be maintained and the network reentry can be optimized by omitting one or more operation procedures.

A method and apparatus for channel sensing in a wireless communication device is provided. A self-signal intentionally transmitted to a first wireless device by another wireless communication device is detected in a signal received by the first wireless device. An original self-signal transmitted by the second wireless device is reconstructed from the detected self-signal. The reconstructed self-signal is then suppressed in the received signal and channel sensing is performed on the remaining signal. If the self-signal cannot be detected and verified in the received signal, the second wireless device may be requested to retransmit a modified self-signal and a predetermined number of attempts made to detect and verify the self-signal. Results of channel estimation performed on the received signal may be used in reconstructing the original self-signal. The channel estimation may include information from a plurality of frames in the received signal.

The controller is also capable of recognizing a CQI variation pattern of the mobile station based upon its responses to a plurality of the CQI polls. The controller is further capable of selecting a CQI polling rate based upon the recognized CQI variation pattern. The controller is also capable of causing the base station to poll the mobile station for CQI at the selected CQI polling rate.
