The thickness of the optical transmissive layer is larger than one wavelength of the light beam. The interval between the surfaces of the solid immersion lens or solid immersion optical system and the optical transmissive layer is smaller than one wavelength of the light beam. Thus, the light beam reflected from the inside of an air gap and the inside of the optical storage medium between the air gap and the recording layer does not function as noise with respect to the light reflected from the recording layer. Also, since the thickness of a protective layer or a substrate which is an external surface of the optical storage medium can be thickened, information can be written or read with respect to the optical storage medium even when the optical storage medium has dust and/or damage.

A servo controlling apparatus of an optical disk drive and a control method thereof are provided for achieving precise control by automatically controlling the gain of error signals caused by the difference in the amount of light irradiated during recording and reproducing, and then using the automatically gain-controlled signal. In a first control step, a focus error signal and a tracking error signal generated from a photodetecting portion via an operator are multiplied by a predetermined value in different multipliers, and then each obtained value is divided by an RF sum signal to control the value of error to within a predetermined target value. In a second control step, each multiplied focus error signal and tracking error signal are divided by a DC signal corresponding to the average level of the RF sum signal when the error value reaches the target value.

The disclosed optical head is provided with an iris for transmitting or passing the central portion of the reflected light when the light reflected from a medium is transmitted by an ordinary objective lens. Another iris is also provided for transmitting or reflecting the periphery of the reflected light and, in this case, an improved objective lens structure including two inner and outer elements is provided. Therefore, in the disclosed optical head, only light reflected from the actual recording region is detected as a reproduction signal. According to the disclosed optical head, high-density recording in identical media becomes possible.

A high density compact disc having tracks for recording large amounts of information reproducible for a long interval of time is disclosed. In order to increase the track density, a recording surface on a substrate is divided into grooves and lands to thereby form tracks, and pits representing information signals are arranged in both the grooves and the lands. Here, the groove is formed at an optimized predetermined depth, depending on the wavelength of light used to read the information recorded on the disc and the refractive index of a disc substrate, to thereby reduce crosstalk caused by pits of an adjacent groove or land during reproduction. Accordingly, the present invention is effective in enhancing the practicality of the compact disc as a medium for preserving large amounts of information.
