A second substrate opposes the first substrate with a gap therebetween. A liquid crystal layer is disposed between the first and second substrates. A color filter is disposed on the first substrate, wherein the color filter is thicker in the transmissive region than in the reflective region, wherein a recess is formed at the reflective region. A first alignment layer is conformably formed on the color filter, forming a second recess in the reflective region. The second recess is filled with a second alignment, wherein the first and second alignment layers provide different orientations and pre-tilt angles for the liquid crystal layer.

The invention is directed to a method for forming a flexible electro-optic film. The method comprises steps of providing a first substrate having a conductive layer formed thereon and then forming a first locating structure over the conductive layer, wherein the locating structure includes target regions and periphery regions. The surface tension of the target regions is difference from that of the periphery regions. Thereafter, an electro-optic medium placing process for forming an electro-optic droplet on each of the target regions is performed. A method for fabricating a thin film transistor (TFT) display is provided, wherein the processes of a liquid crystal substrate and an organic thin film transistor (OTFT) substrate are separated. The fabrication of liquid crystal substrate employs the technology of polymer encapsulated liquid crystal molecule, and leaves the polymeric layer as a substrate using a sacrificial layer, so as to improve the flexibility. And the TFT substrate has a high adhesive polymeric protective layer provided on its surface, so as to combine the fabricated TFT substrate and the liquid crystal substrate by laminating. Thereby, the processes of the liquid crystal substrate and the TFT substrate will not affect each other, to improve the process yield and meet the demand for the variety of products.

A hybrid display comprising a transparent substrate and a plurality of pixels arranged in an array on the transparent substrate is provided. Each of the pixels includes a self-emissive display unit and a transmissive light valve. The transmissive light valve is suitable for modulating the transmittance of ambient light entering from one side of the transparent substrate. A hybrid display with dual side display capability is also provided. The hybrid display can be used under any ambient illumination and has the additional advantages of having low power consumption and compact size.

A method of manufacturing a display panel is described. A substrate is provided. A wall structure is formed on the substrate to define several microcups. A display medium is filled into the microcups. Thereafter, a sealing layer is formed over the microcups filled with the display medium, wherein the sealing layer includes a first material that is immiscible with the display medium and a second material that is miscible with the display medium. A treatment process is performed such that the first material is solidified to form a solidifying layer while the second material miscible in the display medium undergoes a polymerization induced phase separation reaction so as to precipitate in the display medium.

To obtain truly flexible electro-optic films for image display or other related applications and to obtain a low cost solution for making electro-optic films, a new concept for manufacturing such films is disclosed. The method disclosed in this invention include mixing liquid crystal with “sponge particles” having fibril or porous surface morphology, coating such mixture directly on substrates with conductive electrodes and laminating with release liner or another substrate having conductive electrodes. The electro-optic films manufactured by using traditional R2R coating techniques. The electro-optic film manufactured by the method disclosed in the invention can be used for segment type, passive matrix type or active matrix type display applications or other related applications.
