摘要: A technique facilitates drilling applications by providing a unique flex joint. In one embodiment, the flex joint has an adjustable bending stiffness while being much more compact than conventional flex joints. The flex joint also may be designed to de-couple bending moments from the tool joints and, in some applications, can operate as an active vibration and shock control sub by incorporating suitable sensors and a hydraulic actuator system. The design also enables incorporation of other features, such as electrical insulation features disposed above and/or below the flex joint. In some applications, the flex joint also may have an electrical feed through.

摘要: A technique facilitates the drilling of deviated wellbores. A steerable drilling system is formed with a pair of components pivotably mounted with respect to each other. A removable strike ring is mounted to one of the steerable drilling system components and is positioned to engage a corresponding strike ring in a manner which limits the maximum pivot angle between the steerable drilling system components. By interchanging the removable strike ring with other removable strike rings, the maximum pivot angle can be adjusted in the field to accommodate drilling of a wider variety of deviated wellbores.

摘要: A rotary steerable system (“RSS”) includes a drive coupling having a first section adapted for connection within a drill string and a second section adapted for supporting a drill bit. A flexible joint connects the first section to the second section for transmitting drilling loads, such as torque and weight, therebetween and permitting pivoting of the second relative to the first section. A tubular sleeve is disposed about the flexible joint and at least portions of the first section and the second section. The tubular sleeve is connected to the second section for movement therewith and is sized to permit pivoting movement of the tubular sleeve relative to the portion of the first section disposed therein. At least three actuators are carried by the portion of the drive coupling's first section that is disposed within the tubular sleeve for applying a pivoting force to an inner surface of the tubular sleeve when activated.

摘要: A steerable drilling system including a bias unit and a separator. The separator is arranged to remove particulate matter from the supply of pressurized drilling mud to the actuator of the bias unit. The separator includes a hydrocyclone located upstream of the actuators. The hydrocyclone includes a housing defining a substantially conical recess having a large diameter end and a small diameter end. An inlet is in fluid communication with the large diameter end for providing the drilling mud thereto. A first outlet is in fluid communication with the small diameter end for outlet of relatively dirty mud. A second outlet is in fluid communication with the large diameter end for outlet of a supply of relatively clean mud for the plurality of actuators.
