Process and a device for producing metal powders from molten metal. The process includes the provision of molten metal in a metallurgical vessel having a nozzle element, the nozzle element being directed into an atomization chamber associated with the metallurgical vessel. The molten metal is allowed to flow through the nozzle element of the metallurgical vessel into the atomization chamber whereby a molten metal stream is fed into the atomization chamber. At least three successive gas beams are directed at the molten metal stream inside the atomization chamber, the at least three gas beams being oriented in different directions. Thereby the molten metal stream is broken down into droplets which subsequently freeze into grains that are collected. The device includes a metallurgical vessel for holding molten metal provided with a nozzle element for discharging molten metal from the metallurgical vessel in the form of a molten metal stream and an atomization chamber in association with the metallurgical vessel for receiving the molten metal stream discharged from the nozzle element. It also includes at least three gas nozzle elements for providing at least three gas beams of different orientation and directed at different points of the molten metal stream inside the atomization chamber, at least one of the at least three gas nozzle elements being capable of providing a gas beam which deflects and widens and/or divides the molten metal stream entering the atomization chamber; and at least one other gas nozzle element being capable of providing a gas beam which breaks down a widened and thinned and/or divided molten metal stream into droplets.

This invention relates to a capsule for pressings pressed by isostatic pressure and to these pressings used for extruding metallic objects, particularly tubes, of stainless steel, the outer and inner wall of the capsule consisting of thin-walled sheet metal, and at least the outer wall having substantially the same strength properties in the axial direction along its circumference and particularly consisting of a spiral-welded tube, and preferably at least on the front end of the capsule an insert being provided, which consists of one or more pieces of a ductile solid material or a ductile material pressed from powder. The invention further relates to a process for the production of such capsules and pressings and to a process for extruding tubes and to the tubes obtained according to this process.

The invention relates to a process for the powder metallurgical production of objects from tool steel as well as to such an object. The quality of the material, in particular its homogeneity, its degree of purity, and the properties of the same is/are increased by using the process according to:the invention, in which a melt is placed in a metallurgical vessel and conditioned therein, whereupon a powder with an average grain diameter of 50 to 70 &mgr;m is produced from this melt by atomizing it with nitrogen at a temperature that is essentially kept constant, this powder is disintegrated in the nitrogen stream and, while maintaining the nitrogen atmosphere, the powder with a maximum grain diameter of 500 &mgr;m is classified, collected, mixed, introduced into a capsule with a diameter or thickness greater than 300 mm and a length greater than 1000 mm, compacted in this container, and the container is sealed in a gas-tight manner, whereupon, in a hot isostatic pressing cycle therefor, the parameters are set such that, in the heating process, the temperature and the pressure are increased and an isostatic pressing process then is carried out and subsequently the HIP pressed blank is cooled and this pressed blank is optionally then hot formed and, in this manner, a highly pure material with a K0 value according to DIN 50 602 of essentially no greater than 3 is produced.

The process occurs in an apparatus that includes at least one metallurgical vessel adapted to at least one of treat and prepare a batch of the molten mass, and an atomizing chamber including a nozzle part adapted to sputter a portion of the molten mass, a feed side coupled to the metallurgical vessel, and a discharge side. The atomizing chamber has a longitudinal axis arranged inclined downwardly from the feed side to the discharge side. The apparatus also includes a separator adapted for classifying the metal powder, and an encapsulating facility including at least one container. The metal powder is to be inserted and enclosed within the at least one container. A conveyance unit for powder transport includes an ascending pipe oriented to guide the metal powder upwardly. A diverting part is coupled to the discharge side and to a first end of the ascending pipe, and a disintegrator is coupled between a second end of the ascending pipe and the separator. A deflection valve is coupled the disintegrator to the separator. A collecting basin is coupled between the separator and the encapsulating facility, and a shut-off device couples the collecting basin to the encapsulating facility.

The invention relates to the production of a metallic powder consisting of surface-fissured, so-called irregular particles, namely a water-atomised metallic powder. The aim of the invention is to obtain an irregular surface form of powder grains (23) in a narrow weight class and to impart a high porosity with a homogeneous distribution to the sintered body. To this end, in a first step, the pouring stream (2) is deviated in its flow direction and is enlarged on its surface, and in a second step, the surface-enlarged pouring stream (21) is deviated again its flow direction and is divided, and the liquid metallic particles (22) formed are accelerated, and in a third step, the displaced liquid metallic particles (22) are applied and divided, at an angle γ of between 10 and 90° in relation to the displacement direction of the same, with a high speed current (51) formed at least partially from a liquid medium, and the particles (23) are then solidified. According to one embodiment of the invention, in order to reduce the overheating of the metal melt and/or to improve the quality of the metallic powder produced, the pouring stream (2) is deviated in its flow direction and a surface enlargement of the same (21) is carried out, in a first method step, and/or the surface-enlarged pouring stream (21) is deviated and divided, and the formed liquid metallic particles (22) are accelerated, in the second method step, with at least one current (6,31,41) formed from at least one heated gas or heated gas mixture.

A method of powder-metallurgical production of objects, specifically tubes, rods, or the like, wherein a metal and/or metal alloy powder is charged into a thin-walled capsule is provided. The capsule is closed and exposed to a cold-isostatic pressure so as to form a compression of the capsule for subsequent hot-working, specifically hot extrusion. Prior to the cold-isostatic pressure, a mixture of nitrogen and hydrogen is introduced into the capsule together with the powder of metal and/or metal alloys. Simultaneously, pre-compaction of the powder is created by way of vibration or the like, to a density of approximately 60 t0 80% such as, in particular 70% of the theoretical density. After the cold-isostatic pressing step, the capsule is subjected to porosity or leakage testing in a vacuum chamber to monitor or establish the escape of hydrogen. Non-leaking capsules or pressings are then heated and subjected to hot-working such as hot extrusion.
