The invention concerns a coupling with a hub, for transmitting a torque to a shaft, with a cylindrical annular chamber arranged in the hub at a slight spacing from the shaft. The annular chamber can be pressurized with an hydraulically actuated servo valve arranged in the hydraulic fluid channel connecting to said annular chamber. A separate hydraulic fluid channel serves to actuate the servo valve. As control pressure is admitted to this second hydraulic fluid channel, the servo valve opens and establishes the connection between the first hydraulic fluid channel and the annular chamber for admission of a high-pressure medium. The advance of the connecting nipples onto the hub may be effected by remote actuation, thus enabling an automatic roll change, for instance in a rolling mill, without difficult and time-consuming manual assembly in congested space conditions.

The piston of the receiver cylinder supports an indicator, whereof the position is monitored by an external sensor. The transmitter cylinder and receiver cylinder form a hydraulic linkage, preferably with displacement translation for monitoring even small piston movements with reliable control of whether the annular piston has reached its end position. For this purpose, the sensor monitors the position of the indicator attached to the receiver piston, on the outer periphery of the coupling.

The invention concerns a coupling for the detachable connection of two components, preferably a shaft with a hub, which for transmission of a torque are rotatably connected with each other by form-fit. When using such plug or form fit connections such as between a roll journal and a coupling box in a rolling mill, large tolerances must be expected that express themselves in peripheral directions and have adverse effects on the surface integrity of the rolled material. The invention provides for a clamping element which preferably can be inserted in the hub, acted upon by hydraulic fluid to keep the shaft in place relative to the hub. The clamping element is of a two-part design and can be filled with hydraulic fluid through appropriate devices, so that the hub is tightly fastened on the shaft upon assembly. For removal of the hub from the shaft, the pressure in the clamping element is simply relieved.

The invention relates to a frictional resistance coupling for transmitting torque between two coaxial components, for example a shaft with an articulated shaft, the coupling comprises an outer part and an inner part, which enclose an inner chamber with a conical wall. Inserted to move axially in the inner chamber is an annular piston of the same conicity, so that when the annular piston moves axially by means of a pressure medium, a radial clamping force and thus frictional resistance for transmitting torque is produced. The pressure chambers located on both sides of the annular piston in each case comprise a further connection to a low pressure source. The pressure chamber respectively not supplied with high pressure is supplied with pressure medium from a low pressure source during the displacement process and when the piston reaches the end position within the inner chamber, the opening of the low pressure passage is closed by the end face of the piston. Thereupon a higher pressure builds up in the low pressure supply line and a sensor apparatus emits a signal at the time of a corresponding pressure, which is an indication that the annular piston has definitively reached its end position. The apparatus according to the invention should increase the safety against slipping, which is of great signficance particularly in the construction of heavy machines.

According to the invention, a safety coupling, the torque transmission of which takes place as a result of the radial tension of a clamping sleeve which is under high pressure, has a release valve. During a rotation of the shaft relative to the hub, caused by overloading, the release valve is opened, so that the torque transmission is interrupted as a result of a reduction of the pressure in the clamping sleeve. After rotation, the tappet of the release valve is drawn into the release valve, so that the safety coupling can be put into operation again as a result of a pressure buildup, without any destruction or wear occurring.

A series of leaf-spring assemblies are arrayed around the hub and the leaf-springs thereof project from the inner hub to the outer ring. A respective groove in the outer ring receives at least the longer ones of the leaf-springs of each assembly. Reinforcements are positioned in these grooves for being engaged by the leaf-springs. The leaf-springs of each assembly are of varying length. For holding the leaf-spring assemblies to the hub, there are wedge-shaped intermediate pieces between adjacent leaf-spring assemblies. Alternate wedge-shaped intermediate pieces are fastened to the hub and the other alternate ones are integrally formed with the hub.

A drive unit for a vehicle comprises an engine for driving a gear-shift transmission through an input shaft. The input shaft is also coupled via a gear assembly and a hydrodynamic coupling to a flywheel accumulator. During acceleration of the vehicle, kinetic energy stored in the flywheel flows to the input shaft of the transmission. When braking takes place, energy from the input shaft flows to the flywheel accumulator. The torque transmitted by the hydrodynamic coupling is adjustable. As the coupling slippage approaches a boundary of a slippage region in the coupling, a control device effects a switching of the gear-shift transmission whereby readjustment of the coupling slippage is achieved. Furthermore, the control device controls the gear-shift transmission--on the basis of whether "acceleration" or "braking" is demanded--such that the speed of rotation of a first coupling half in the coupling, as viewed from the direction of energy flow, is greater than the speed of rotation of another coupling half.

A drive assembly for a motor vehicle, especially for city buses, consists of a continuously variable transmission (G) and four clutches (31, 32, 33 and 34). The first clutch (31) connects a prime mover (M) to a flywheel (S), the second (32) the flywheel (S) to intermediate gearing (Z), the third (33) the prime mover (M) to a driven shaft (30), and the fourth (34) the intermediate gearing (Z) to the driven shaft (30). To keep the variable transmission (G) as simple as possible it has a differential (D) with three transmission components (21, 22, and 23) and is preferably in the form of a planetary-gear set. The variable transmission (G) is composed of two, preferably hydrostatic units (G.sub.1 and G.sub.2). The internal geared wheel (23) of the planetary-gear set (D) is preferably connected to the prime mover, its sun wheel (21) with one hydrostatic unit (G.sub.1), and its ring gear (22) with both the intermediate gearing (Z) and the other hydrostatic unit (G.sub.2).
