    Abstract: A retainer for releasably securing a headset earphone assembly of the type having a pair of pin receiving recesses therein to a flexible helmet in which a relatively rigid frame is formed with an outwardly opening peripheral channel adapted releasably to receive a portion of the flexible helmet body surrounding an opening therein adjacent to the ear of a wearer. A pair of housings formed by the rigid frame receive plates for sliding movement inwardly and outwardly of the frame opening which is so shaped that an earphone assembly placed therein is oriented with its pin receiving recesses aligned with projections on the sliding plates to permit the projections to be moved into the recesses and to be releasably locked into position securely to hold the headset assembly onto the flexible helmet.

    Abstract: A buoyant jacket especially adapted for use by persons such as sailboat crewmen engaged in strenuous physical activity in which each of two integral differentially buoyant right and left bodies has a thin waist portion leading up to a chest portion having a vertical slit in its outer skin and a thicker shoulder portion having transverse slits in its outer skin with a hollowed inner surface area in each body below the shoulder and in which the jacket back comprises right and left buoyant bodies each of which tapers in thickness from a shoulder area toward the waist and each of which has an outer transverse groove in the region of a shoulder blade of the wearer.     Abstract: A sound-attenuating earcup device adapted for use either with or without a safety helmet, comprising a rigid cup with a resilient seal attached to the rim of the cup. The seal has an annular surface for engaging the wearer''s head, and has a dimension between the cup rim and the outermost head-engaging portion of this surface that varies around the periphery of the cup in accordance with the contours of a human head. In one form, the surface of the seal which comes into contact with the wearer''s head includes inner and outer flanges defining a channel having diverging side flanges. When the seal is pressed into engagement with the side of the wearer''s head, the flanges spread apart and the material between the flanges is stressed in tension, thereby improving the effectiveness of the seal at the flanges and, hence, the sound-attenuating properties. The outer flange is contoured to follow the contours of a human head. A tortuous, pressure-equalizing, sound-attenuating fluid path is provided through the wall of the earcup, for use in situations where the ambient pressure is subject to variation. In another form, the seal has a wide contact surface arranged to engage the wearer''s head essentially continuously between its outer and inner annular edges; the contact surface, which may be smooth or corrugated, slopes inwardly toward the center of the earcup with a pitch that varies around the cup to follow the head contours.
