    Abstract: A selectively self-locking deadbolt latch for incorporation into doors or the like. The latch can be preliminarily "armed" such that as the door closes the bolt will extend into the opening of the door strike. The latch mechanism includes a cam lever having a shoulder which loads against the bolt extension. A compression spring within the bolt urges the bolt towards the locked position once the cam lever is released from the bolt extension by closing the door. The temporary retraction of the bolt as it engages the door strike releases the bolt and cam lever. A beam spring acting on the cam lever urges the cam lever forward towards the locked position. The bolt is initially armed by turning the inner turn lever slightly or by depressing the end of the bolt which includes chamfered edges to allow the bolt to move past the door strike for release.

    Abstract: One part of a key-in-knob lock set functions in a normal manner such that when the lock set is unlocked, either the outside or inside knob can be manipulated to open the door by withdrawing the latch bolt from a normal spring latch extended position. When, instead, the lock set is locked, the latch bolt is extended an exceptionally long distance into the frame to a dead bolt position. Extension and retraction of the latch bolt to and from dead bolt position is accomplished by manipulation of a main cam through the agency of a key in the outside or a turn button on the inside.For withdrawing the latch bolt from the normal spring latch extended position, an escutcheon housing for the outside knob or a corresponding escutcheon housing for the inside knob serves, by moving transversely of the axis of rotation of the knob, to rotate a radially extending tooth-like element on the spindle which, acting through the main cam, withdraws the latch bolt.By rotation of the key on the outside, or the turn button on the inside, the spindle is rotated a greater amount, far enough to have the main cam extend the latch bolt an additional distance to the dead bolt position. In that dead bolt position the tooth-like element for the hub cam of the outside knob is moved out of the path of movement of the respective drive housing so that rotation of the outside knob has no effect on the latch bolt. The tooth-like element for the hub cam of the inside knob remains, however, in movable engagement with the corresponding drive housing so that rotation of the inside knob does in fact withdraw the latch bolt from the dead bolt position.

    Abstract: A door latch makes use of moldable material for most of the individual parts with opposite roses adapted to interlock with each other and be held together with a single screw on the axial center line of the knobs and accessible from the outside. Prior to installation of the latch on the door each knob is subassembled with the corresponding rose by employment of an arcuate shoulder on an inner central portion of the knob which is rotated to a position of engagement with a complementary arcuate shoulder in the rose. Rotation inhibiting detents prevent accidental disassembly until the spindle is mounted in place and the spindle then locks the knob against disassembly as long as the latch remains mounted on the door.

    Abstract: A latch assembly for mounting in a bore extending in from a side edge of a door has a backset adjustment for different distances between rotational axis of a handle or keylock and the side edge of the door. The bolt has a concentric aperture into which a bolt adjuster slidably mates with a close tolerance to prevent lateral movement between the bolt and the bolt adjuster. The latch assembly comprises a casing assembly having a bolt assembly longitudinally reciprocal therein between a retracted position and an extended position, the bolt assembly including a bolt with a cylindrical aperture therein, the bolt rotatable and reciprocal relative to a non-rotational cylindrical bolt adjuster and having a sliding fit thereon. A helical groove in one of the bolt or the bolt adjuster engages with a projection of the other of the bolt or bolt adjuster. The casing assembly is in two parts with a non-rotational rear casing integral with a hollow cylindrical portion with a non-helical serpentine shaped slot, and a forward hollow cylindrical casing rotatable and slidable about the front portion of the rear casing, with the forward casing having an internal protrusion to engage in the non-helical serpentine shaped slot. Thus the forward casing and bolt can be rotated together but through significantly different patterns of movement to change the backset with the bolt moving longitudinally ahead of the forward casing midway through simultaneous rotation of both.

    Abstract: A latch assembly for mounting in a bore extending in from a side edge of a door has a backset adjustment for different distances between rotational axis of a handle or keylock and the side edge of the door.     Abstract: A dead bolt lock set is designed to be key actuated on the inside as well as on the outside of the door. For the inside there is an inside tailpiece in engagement with a drive slot in the dead bolt hub. A lost motion circumferential recess on the inside tailpiece provides stops at positions such that when the key is inserted on the inside and turned to lock the dead bolt by action of a micro drive pin, the key cannot be returned in reverse direction to key release position without unlocking the dead bolt. Consequently, the key must remain captive in the inside keyway to keep the dead bolt locked because of being held in the cylinder by the pin tumblers.When the lock has been locked from the outside, the drive slot in the head of the tailpiece is rotated out of line with the inside key slot. Under this condition when unlocking from the inner trim, the tailpiece and washer are forced inward by the key tip compressing the conical spring and allowing full key insertion. Bolt retraction (unlocking) may be accomplished by rotation of the key in the bolt extended direction until the key tip aligns with the tailpiece drive slot, then rotating the key back to the vertical (withdrawn) position, or, in the alternative, rotating the key in the retract direction, whereby the micro pin contacts the lost motion stop on the tailpiece head thereby driving the mechanism to the retracted position. The captive key mechanism is fail safe in that in the event the conical spring fails to return the tailpiece to a position abutting the end of cylinder plug for captive kay operation, the mechanism will still function as a standard cylinder allowing normal locking and unlocking.

    Abstract: A disengaging spindle locking mechanism for the latch bolt of a mortise type lock is actuated by the locking slide which is normally employed to engage a retractor hub to prevent the hub from being rotated. At the inner end of a split spindle where it is in non-rotatable engagement with the retractor hub there is a cam surface. On the inner end of a locking slide is a cam surface which cams the spindle out of engagement with the hub as hub action is blocked by the slide. Thereafter, should force be applied to the spindle, it will merely spin in place and no damage will be done to the lock mechanism such as might otherwise be done by unauthorized persons to force open the lock.
