A long-life bearing steel and a long-life rolling bearing made of the steel are disclosed. In the steel, the number of oxide or oxide-based inclusion particles in a given unit area A of 160 mm.sup.3 with an average particle size of 3 to 30 .mu.m is 80 or less and an abundance of oxide or oxide-base inclusion particles with 10 .mu.m or more average particle size to oxide or oxide-based inclusion particles having an average particle size of 3 to 30 .mu.m is below 2%. An electron beam melting extraction evaluation method irradiating electron beam under the following condition guarantees the cleanness of the steel: 350 V+100.ltoreq.J.ltoreq.700 V+200, wherein J represents electric charge power in W provided by electron beam and V represents a sample volume in cm.sup.3.

A first object is to provide a method for evaluating large-sized inclusions in a bearing steel. The method enables quantitative evaluation of large-sized inclusions even if the steel has a high degree of cleanliness. Further, a second object is to provide an appropriate bearing steel evaluated by the method for evaluating large-sized inclusions. Further, a third object is to provide a rolling bearing capable of eliminating short life products and cracked products and providing longer lifetime for entire bearings. In order to achieve the first object, a round bar formed of a bearing steel to be evaluated and an ultrasonic probe are placed in an ultrasonic transmission medium, and the size and number of large-sized inclusions that are present in the flaw detection volume are measured to estimate the existence probability of large-sized inclusions in the bearing steel to be evaluated. The second object is achieved by specifying large-sized inclusions that are present in the bearing steel in accordance with the method for evaluating large-sized inclusions. Further, to achieve the third object, a rolling bearing is manufactured from a seamless steel tube, as material, having a diameter of 180 mm or less and a wall thickness of 25 mm or less, and ensured that it does not include a defect having a length of 1 mm of more at its material stage.

A rolling bearing includes an outer raceway, an inner raceway, a plurality of rolling elements interposed between the outer raceway and the inner raceway, and a cage for holding the rolling elements away from each other at the same interval in a rolling direction of the rolling elements, the cage including a first layer subjected to a surface treatment of at least one of carbonitriding, phosphating, sulfonitriding and gas soft nitfriding, and a second layer formed of at least one of PTFE, MoS.sub.2, WS.sub.2, Ag and Sn when the first layer includes a treated surface subjected to the surface treatment of phosphating. The rolling bearing can stabilize the attitude of the rolling elements and retain the ease of grinding them. At the same time, the dynamic torque of the rolling elements can be minimized while insuring to prevent the rolling elements from falling away from the cage.
