Abstract: An internal combustion engine may include at least one cylinder and at least one hollow-heat valve. The at least one hollow-head valve may include a valve shaft and a valve head, and may be guided in a valve shaft guide. The engine may also include at least one valve seat ring on which the valve head sealingly lies when the at least one hollow-head valve is closed. The engine may additionally include a valve shaft seal with at least two seal lips and oil disposed between the valve shaft and the valve shaft guide. The at least one valve seat ring may be composed of a sintered metal including infiltrated copper. The valve shaft may include one of a chromium-containing coating and a boron carbide-containing coating.

Abstract: A method for making a valve stem seal, comprising the steps of providing a metal retainer having a top portion and a body portion. The body portion having a first section and a second section. In a first state, the first section of the body portion is cylindrical and the second section of the body portion is cone shaped. Providing a hollow mold. Inserting the metal retainer into the outer mold piece, inserting the inner mold piece into the metal retainer, and then securing the inner and outer mold pieces to each other. Filling a cavity around the top portion of the metal retainer with an elastomeric compound. Removing the metal retainer and the formed rubber sealing element from the mold pieces, and pressing downward over the formed valve stem seal to compress the second section of the body portion radially inwardly.

Abstract: [Problems to be Solved] The present invention provides a DLC (diamond like carbon) film coating and a coated valve lifter, wherein the DLC film can be formed at a film forming rate comparable with that achieved in the case of forming the DLC coating film by the CVD (chemical vapor deposition) method and has good durability comparable with that obtained in the case of forming the DLC film coating by the sputtering film forming method.[Solution] The DLC film coating includes an intermediate layer 3 deposited on the surface of a base substrate and a DLC layer 4 deposited on the intermediate layer 3. The intermediate layer 3 is formed of metal carbide or metal capable of forming a hard surface and the DLC layer 4 is formed by adding a common metal element to that contained in the intermediate layer 3 thereto while inert gas containing hydrocarbon gas is being introduced. As a result, the intermediate layer 3 and the DLC layer 4 can be formed by sequential sputtering processing and in addition, an H (hydrogen) content contained in the DLC layer 4 can be adjusted by forming a Me-DLC (metal addition DLC) layer as a DLC layer 4.

Abstract: A method of forming a poppet valve having a stem, a valve head and a valve seat while concurrently maintaining compressive residual stress without grain coarsening on both the valve body and the valve seat. The method includes forming a rounded cladded part on the valve head of the poppet valve by welding and forming a valve seat surface at a predetermined aperture angle and cutting the cladded part to form a smooth surface which is subjected to uniform contact pressure at a temperature less than the recrystallization temperature of the base material or cladding material, whichever is lower, to enhance the durability of the valve seat.
