    Abstract: A head-worn system has one or more illumination, imaging, communication, and/or other controlled elements electrically connected to a switch element (e.g., a piezo switch) positioned on the head-worn system so as to be overlying an area of a wearer's masseter muscle when worn on the wearer's person. The switch element is configured to be activated responsive to clenching of the wearer's jaw. The one or more controlled elements may be arranged to provide directional lighting/imaging from the point of view of the wearer, for example from the area of the wearer's zygomatic bones, when the head-worn system is worn on the wearer's person.

    Abstract: Systems and methods for operating a controlled device via an activation accessory that includes a vibration motor, a wearable module including a clench-detection sensor (e.g., a Hall effect sensor), and a communication element. The sensor is coupled to a controller, which has an output coupled to a control signal interface and another output coupled to the vibration motor. The controller is programmed to receive and evaluate input signals from the sensor to determine whether or not they represent a command for the controlled device by assessing the input signals for a signal pattern indicative of a plurality of volitional jaw clench actions of a wearer of the wearable module. If/when the processor determines that the input signals represent the command, then it decodes the command and transmits an associated control signal to the controlled device via the control signal interface as well as an activation signal to the vibration motor.

    Abstract: A trauma scene monitoring system includes a medic-worn illumination device, a casualty-worn informatics system, and a remote monitoring station. The illumination device includes a frame with boom-mounted light sources positioned below the wearer's eyes near the zygomatic bones, thus orienting the light sources to project light in the direction of the wearer's view. Also included are audio/video means to capture audio/video information from a scene attended by the medic, and a telemetry unit to transmit that information to the remote monitoring station. The casualty-worn informatics system is integrated within a headband worn by a monitored individual. The informatics system includes sensors to provide the monitored individual's vital statistics and a telemetry unit to transmit data concerning the monitored individual to the remote monitoring station. At the remote monitoring station, receiving and presentation stations provide views of the data concerning the monitored individual and audio/video data from the medic-worn illumination device.

    Abstract: Illumination devices as include a frame intended to be worn by a user and one or more light sources (e.g., LEDs) positioned by the frame so as to be near a user's zygomatic bones and oriented to project light in a direction of the user's view when the illumination device is worn on the wearer's head. The frame may be shaped to be worn over the user's ears and behind the user's head, and may be made of one or more of plastic, metal and/or a metal alloy, carbon fiber, wood, cellulose acetate, natural horn and/or bone, leather, and an epoxy resin. An optional strap may be retractably attached to connect portions of the frame over the wearer's head. The LEDs may be included in respective panels swivelly mounted to booms of the frame and the panels may further include imaging devices, such as a camera, and/or a projector.

    Abstract: Eyewear or other head-worn apparatus are fitted with an activation accessory that includes one or more switch elements integrated with or attached to a nose piece of the eyewear. The switch elements are communicably coupled to a processor-based controller so as to provide input signals to the controller responsive to wearer-initiated activations of the switch elements through interaction with a frame or temple piece of the eyewear. Upon receipt, the controller evaluates the input signals to determine whether or not they represent a command for the controlled device by assessing the input signals for a signal pattern indicative of such a command, and then, if the evaluation determines that the input signals do represent the command, issues the command to the controlled device. Otherwise the controller proceeds to receive and evaluate further input signals from the switch elements in a like manner as the first input signals.
