The present invention relates to a method of controlling luminance of a backlight based on a processed image data after receiving information of image data, in order to improve the visibility of moving picture. An inverter according to the present invention includes a first block generating a first luminance control signal with an analog value depending on the luminance control signal with a duty ratio depending on a synchronization signal. The luminance control signals generated by the respective blocks are synthesized luminance control signal. Accordingly, a liquid crystal display employing two backlight control methods can be provided. Thus, it is possible to remove the drag phenomenon of a screen and, at the same time, to improve the visibility for moving picture.

Disclosed are a power supplying apparatus and a LCD having the same that reduces manufacturing cost of a large-scale LCD module and enhances powpower efficiency by integrating an external dc power supply used in a large-scale LCD panel into a LCD panel. A first voltage converter converts an external ac voltage into a first dc voltage, and changes a voltage level of the first de voltage into a second dc voltage having a highr voltage level than that of the first de voltage. A second voltage converter converts the second dc voltage into an ac voltage, raises a voltage level of the converted ac voltage, and provides the raised ac voltage to a load. A current detector detects a current flowing through the load, and provides a current detection signal as a feedback signal to the first voltage converter so that the first voltage provide a constant direct current output voltage.

Disclosed is a liquid crystal display device having a lamp driving apparatus for preventing lamps from being damaged due to electric current variation among the lamps. A DC/DC converter converts an externally provided DC voltage input into a converted DC voltage signal having a predetermined voltage level. A DC/AC inverter inverts the converted DC voltage signal into an AC voltage signal to supply the inverted AC voltage signal to an input terminal of a lamp. A power controller detects electric current flowing the lamp at an output terminal of the lamp to control the level of the inverted AC voltage signal output from the DC/AC inverter and bypasses a part of electric current applied to the input terminal of the lamp when a level of the detected electric current is higher than a predetermined threshold value. Therefore, when the level of the electric current flowing through the lamp exceeds the predetermined threshold value, the power controller bypasses the part of the electric current supplied to the lamp to the ground, thereby decreasing the amount of the electric current supplied to the lamp and preventing the lamp from being damaged.

The power supplying part provides a plurality of lamps electrically connected in parallel to each other with power. The feedback detection part receives current that flows via the lamps to provide the power supplying part with a feedback signal that prevents the power supplying part from providing normal lamps with power, when at least one of the lamps are abnormal. Although one power supply provides all lamps with power, when at least one of the lamps is abnormal, then whole circuit is opened. Thus, excess current does not flow via remaining lamps that are normal. Thus, a life span of the lamps is not reduced, and a lamp driving device is safe.

An apparatus of a light source for a liquid crystal display includes two transformers connected between a driver and respective lamps, and a driving signal from a driver is supplied to the lamps through the transformers. Secondary sides of the transformers are connected to each other, and a node between the transformers works as a neutral point in that loads connected to the transformers are symmetrical. The neutral point moves when the symmetry of the load distribution is broken under abnormal operation such as arc generation due to disconnection of the transformers. The movement of the neutral point increases the voltage at the node between the transformers and the driver is shut down when a voltage divided from the voltage of the node is larger than a reference voltage.
