    Abstract: A tunneling machine is disclosed which includes a support frame, a rotatable cutter head, and inside roller cutters and gage roller cutters for cutting or crushing the end face of a tunnel. Each gage cutter is provided with a gage scraper which includes a first scraper portion for engaging the tunnel end face and a second scraper portion for engaging the cylindrical tunnel wall to clear protruding formation particles from the path of the gage cutter. A resilient mounting means resiliently biases the first and second scraper portions against their respective tunnel surfaces to provide substantially continuous contact therewith as the scraper portions become worn, and to permit retraction of the scraper portions if they encounter a formation particle which they cannot remove. A guide plate prevents movement of the resiliently mounted scraper portions toward the gage cutters in the direction of travel of the gage cutters around the tunnel end face to permit mounting the scraper portions on gage saddles immediately adjacent the gage cutters. Intersecting edge portions of the guide plate form fixed scrapers for further protection of the gage cutters.

    Abstract: A tunneling machine is disclosed having a support frame and a movable frame carried on the support frame by articulated torque arm units. Each unit includes two torque arms pivotally connected together at a central pivot point. Each arm includes a U-shaped yoke member, and the end portions of one of the yoke members are pivotally connected to the movable frame at body pivot points while the end portions of the other are pivotally connected to the support frame at body pivot points. A reinforcing member and a prestressing rod cooperate to prevent separation of the end portions of each yoke member to prevent separating and slamming together of their thrust bearing contact surfaces under severe loading conditions. Self-aligning ball bushings are provided at each body pivot point and at the central pivot point to insure perfect thrust bearing contact surface alignment even if the unit is deflected by severe shock loading.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for continuously drilling and lining a small diameter horizontal tunnel are disclosed. A head assembly of the tunneling machine includes a support section and a rotatable section which is rotatably journaled on the support section. The rotatable section includes at least one roller cutter which engages the end face of the tunnel for removing material from the end face. A rotatable drive shaft extends through the tunnel and is connected to the rotatable section for providing the sole means for rotating the rotatable section. A thrust unit at the portal of the tunnel is connected to the tunnel liner and applies a force solely through the tunnel liner to axially advance the head assembly.

    Abstract: A roller cutter assembly adapted to be fixed to the cutter head of a tunneling machine is disclosed. The cutter assembly includes a cutter rotatably mounted on a shaft so that end portions of the shaft project from the cutter. Each of those projecting end portions has a pair of flat faces the planes of which intersect at an angle of 90*. A generally U-shaped saddle having projecting arm portions mounts the shaft so that the cutter is rotatable on the shaft. Each arm of the saddle has a pair of flat faces the planes of which intersect at an angle of 90 degrees and which engage the faces on a projecting end portion of the shaft. The engaged faces are clamped together by bolts, each of which exerts a clamping force having components normal to the engaged faces and each of which is more nearly horizontal than vertical with respect to the intended cutting plane. According to one aspect of this invention, the cutter is a gauge cutter and one projecting arm portion of the saddle may be removed from the remainder of the saddle to facilitate removal and replacement of the gauge cutter.

    Abstract: A light beam guiding device for a tunneling machine includes a light source for emitting a beam of light, a first target, and a second target. The first target includes means for passing a light pattern to the second target which is dependent upon the position of the first target relative to the light beam. The second target includes means for indicating the location of the light pattern thereon. Proper alignment of the tunneling machine relative to the light beam is determined by a predetermined light pattern from the first target falling on a predetermined location of the second target. Each target is mounted on the tunneling machine by a mounting means, each of which includes a means to adjustably position its associated target relative to the tunneling machine to compensate for machine roll.

    Abstract: A tunneling machine includes a support frame, a rotatable cutter head, and inside roller cutters and gage roller cutters for cutting or crushing the end face of a tunnel. Each gage cutter has a gage scraper with a scraper blade engaging the tunnel surface for clearing materials from the path of the gage cutter. A spring biases the scraper blade toward the tunnel surface, and the scraper blade is pivotally mounted with respect to the cutter head for movement toward and away from the tunnel surface along an arcuate path. A bolt head in the arcuate path provides an adjustable stop for preventing excessive outward travel of the scraper blade when a void is encountered in the tunnel surface. The bolt also provides a release means to displace the scraper blade away from the tunnel surface to permit removal of the scraper blade.
