摘要: An apparatus and method for transmitting packets having quality of service requirement wherein the quality of service requirements associated with the packets are received at an input, said quality of service parameters include at least one of delay, bandwidth, peak bandwidth and retransmission bandwidth. The received quality of service parameters are mapped to radio protocol parameters including at least one of a priority slot interval, a priority slot phase, a packet duration and modulation format for the radio channel. The packets are transmitted on a radio channel according to the mapped radio protocol parameters.

摘要: Wireless communication terminals and methods are disclosed that determine acoustic ranging synchronized to RF communication signals. A communication terminal can include a RF transceiver, a microphone, and a controller. The controller synchronizes a clock in response to known timing characteristics of received RF communication signals. The controller determines an acoustic signal generation time relative to the RF communication signal synchronized clock at which the other communication terminal will generate an acoustic signal. The controller determines an acoustic signal receipt time relative to the RF signal synchronized clock when the acoustic signal from the other communication terminal is detected in the microphone signal. The controller further determines a propagation time of the acoustic signal from the other communication terminal to the microphone based on a difference between the acoustic signal generation time and the acoustic signal receipt time, and determines a range to the other communication terminal in response to the propagation time of the acoustic signal.

摘要: Packet transmissions between a base station and terminals are performed using half-duplex uplink and downlink transmission intervals with adaptive intra-interval packet retransmission and packet expansion. The uplink and downlink transmission intervals used for communication with a terminal may be offset commensurate with a degree of symmetry of information flow between the terminal and the base station. The offset between the uplink and downlink transmission intervals may be adaptively adjusted based on a type of information being communicated between terminals and the base station. For example, different offsets may be used for voice and data communications. In some embodiments of the present invention, uplink and downlink transmission intervals for communications with a terminal have substantially equal durations. For example, voice packet transmissions between the base station and the terminal may use uplink and downlink transmission intervals having substantially equal durations.

Transceivers with highly asymmetric requirements that need only a high-rate transmission or only high-rate reception functionality are supported by including a high-rate transmitter to support pushing data out or a high-rate receiver to support pulling data into the transceiver at high data rates.

摘要: Methods and apparatus are provided for establishing a connection between a scanner device and a pager device over a sequence of hop channels. The scanner device is repetitively activated and a hop channel is selected from the sequence of hop channels as a function of a present phase. A determination is made as to whether the selected hop channel is a forbidden hop channel. A substitute hop channel is selected from the sequence of hop channels as the selected hop channel if the selected hop channel is a forbidden hop channel. The selected hop channel is monitored for receipt of a paging message during the present phase.

摘要: In a communication network having a plurality of units and a distributed MAC protocol, wherein data is exchanged between units during at least some of the time slots in a succession of time slots, a method is provided for establishing a desired network configuration. The method includes the step of designating one of the units as a supervisory unit and the other units as non-supervisory units. Certain of the time slots are designated as supervisory priority slots. All of the non-supervisory units are required to monitor transmissions from the supervisory unit during each of the supervisory priority slots, and the supervisory unit is operated to transmit an instruction establishing the desired network configuration only during one of the supervisory priority slots.

摘要: A carrier frequency is selected to be used to communicate information to a transceiver in a communication system. Selecting includes, on each of one or more carrier frequencies, transmitting a probe message to the transceiver. A frequency offset between any two adjacent ones of the carrier frequencies is at least about 8 MHz. One or more response messages are received from the transceiver, wherein each of the one or more response messages is a response to a received one of the one or more probe messages. The one or more response messages are used to determine which of the one or more carrier frequencies will be used to communicate information to the transceiver. In some embodiments, each of the probe messages includes a training sequence, and information included in the one or more response messages enables selection of one of a number of possible modulation schemes to be used.

摘要: Method, apparatus, and system for synchronization in radio communication systems are presented. The method includes the steps of encapsulating symbols in an information stream then modulating the stream. The modulated information stream is then sent over a communication channel at a first robustness level, and the level of robustness of the information stream is then reduced to a second robustness level according to a predetermined function. The modulated information stream is received from the communication channel. The information stream is then demodulated after a first number of symbols have been received, wherein the first number of symbols is less than a second number of symbols that would have to be received to demodulate a corresponding information stream sent over the communication channel only at the second robustness level.
